There's loads of lobbying and negotiating around softening the EU 2035 ban on ICE cars, with a suggestion there will be a small allowance for non-electric cars to be made after that cutoff.

It’s meaningless for most people though. It’s pretty much an exemption for very high end cars. 10% of car output exempt and a host of other strings attached on top. Good news if you’re buying the next generation La Ferrari or P1 or 918.

Yeah, but kinda will be the same thing. We’re currently not even in the 55% emission reduction bracket which will take place in 2030, just look at how heavily hybridised and expensive everything has got. And many manufacturers haven’t even hit that and are backdating it with proposed future EV sales. 55% will be even more grim but you’ll still be able to buy a 911 type hybridised sports car. 90% will only leave the very top stuff alone.

I saw some maths on a tweet but it’s more like 1 in 11 or 12 cars can be ICE/hybrid. But then you’d also have to consider carbon credits sharing and pooling. Is it more valuable for BMW to make a hybrid M3 or just have a M8 and give the rest to Rolls Royce.

I saw some maths on a tweet but it’s more like 1 in 11 or 12 cars can be ICE/hybrid. But then you’d also have to consider carbon credits sharing and pooling. Is it more valuable for BMW to make a hybrid M3 or just have a M8 and give the rest to Rolls Royce.

I’d have thought the more luxurious stuff would be better suited to a silent silky smooth drivetrain where you don’t really need to care about weight or handling finesse anyway.

All speculation but I'm hoping sense will prevail with range extender or hybrid type tech to qualify.

The new Smart#5&6 PHEV does 177 miles on electric with 430bhp. There must be some middle ground that can be agreed on PHEV mandates to satisfy an EV requirement e.g minimum 150 mile range which would exceed plenty of 2020 EV ranges!
