Plus it's incredibly easy to manipulate as no MOT station is going to be investigating the ECU.

Milage blocker companies loving this news. Still surprised how common this is, but even more so now the potential cost savings could be huge if you fit one.V8Granite wrote: Wed Nov 26, 2025 1:05 pm Plus it's incredibly easy to manipulate as no MOT station is going to be investigating the ECU.

Still think it’s overall an awful plan. Either they implement mass monitoring or clocking will become rife.
How about not having a sig at all?
Re: Bye Bye Rachel Reeves
Correct, but I imagine it'll be an annual self declaration, that is also declared/trued-up if the vehicle is sold in the first three years. Just my guess though, could be off the mark.

Welp, someone's getting fucking sacked.OBR apologises and launches investigation into 'technical error'published at 12:27
We've just had this statement sent to us by the Office for Budget Responsibility (OBR):
"A link to our economic and fiscal outlook document went live on our website too early this morning. It has been removed.
"We apologise for this technical error and have initiated an investigation into how this happened.
"We will be reporting to our oversight board, the Treasury, and the Commons Treasury Committee on how this happened, and we will make sure this does not happen again.
"Our economic and fiscal outlook and supporting documents will be released when the Chancellor has finished her speech."

Covid style checkpoints in car parks. You drive in once a month. Mileage recorded on your digital ID.
How about not having a sig at all?
Re: Bye Bye Rachel Reeves
First MOT now brought forward to twelve months?
There's been grumblings before about some cars/vans doing moon miles before they are presented for their first MOT

Re: Bye Bye Rachel Reeves
Salary sacrifice changes sound shit.
Re: Bye Bye Rachel Reeves
As above re the three year gap... OBR say 400,000 fewer BEVs will be sold over the period as a result...Simon wrote: Wed Nov 26, 2025 12:31 pmMOT based I bet. No real way to do it any other way. And that means you'll be paying for miles done outside the country too.
Taxing pensions, savings, people who put their capital at risk as small business owners and take dividends. Really top tier stuff.
They haven't put NI on LLPs which is somewhat of a positive but I expect that's just be reserved for the next budget when lo and behold, their expenditure has ballooned yet again.
Re: Bye Bye Rachel Reeves
Can't see many positives in there for me personally, maybe we all have to take a bite of the shit sandwich once in a while.
Re: Bye Bye Rachel Reeves
People who are sacrificing some of their available spending now so that in future, they'll be less of a burden on the state... Yeah, let's tax those fuckers!!

Re: Bye Bye Rachel Reeves
They managed to make this sound way worse than it actually is. Labour PR/spin strikes again! They'll be subject to tax in the same way as non-SS pension contributions. I.e. they won't be subject to income tax, will be subject to IR relief. But will be subject to NI presumably for both employer and employee.
That's my understanding anyway.
Re: Bye Bye Rachel Reeves
Whatever way you slice it, I sacrifice the same amount of my salary as before but my pension pot grows by a smaller amount than before. The difference goes to the exchequer etc.
Re: Bye Bye Rachel Reeves
It's been poorly explained by the govt. but it shouldn't result in less going into your pension, unless your employer was giving you the NI savings as well, surely?
Re: Bye Bye Rachel Reeves
Badenoch's response has been quite amusing.
Re: Bye Bye Rachel Reeves
It will result in more NI being levied on the employee for the same pension contribution so it means that to maintain the same level you get poorer that you were previously using the salary sacrifice scheme. The obvious corollary of that is that people may choose to put less in to maintain the same level of income they had before.8Ball wrote: Wed Nov 26, 2025 2:01 pm It's been poorly explained by the govt. but it shouldn't result in less going into your pension, unless your employer was giving you the NI savings as well, surely?
And obviously these are breaches of the pledge not to tax "working people" more. People using salary sacrifice for pensions are working people, people that get interest income are also often working people, not wealthy individuals living solely off savings and investments. Freezing bands obviously also increases tax on working people, otherwise if they weren't paying more that there would be no reason to do it.

Re: Bye Bye Rachel Reeves
Yes, but the amount you sacrifice still goes fully into your pension. You (and your employer) just get a hit in the pocket, unless you decide to reduce your contributions, which may well happen of course. I'd bet the bigger knock on effect will be how employers try and save the extra NI costs that they incur.
I do agree it's a bit shit hitting pensions like that.

Re: Bye Bye Rachel Reeves
Yep - e.g. the 100k retail workers that got laid off because they put up NI on employers.8Ball wrote: Wed Nov 26, 2025 2:19 pm Yes, but the amount you sacrifice still goes fully into your pension. Re: Bye Bye Rachel Reeves
Indeed. And likely lower pay rises, etc.
Edit: possibly those employers who are generous enough to offer an amount great than the auto enrollment minimum but re-think, so potentially a reduction there
