Case showed zero at 10pm lastnight. Expected to come out to a frozen car but happily it hadn’t froze over night and had increased to a whopping 1 degree. Had a few showers that looked ever so slightly sleety on the windscreen

First frost of the season on the cars this morning. No signs of any salt on the roads so hopefully we can avoid that a little longer.

Annoyingly my best car in slippery conditions, the mito, has frameless doors with drop glass which are a pain!

Repeating myself, but (whilst they don't "feed" the rubber as well) I think the little clear silicon shoe shine pads are even better than gummi pflegge for preventing the glass adhering to the door seal. Bonus that they are £buttons.

Anyone who’s lived in city and in the countryside, e.g. @Mito Man do you think winter is more pleasurable and rewarding in the city or in the countryside?

In my experience you are far more aware of each of the seasons when you are outside of the city - changes in foliage and wildlife are more visible.

There is never any escaping the cold, but it feels like I get to savour more of the positives.

I guess it depends how rural. We’re in a village and look out over fields to the front, it can definitely feel colder here than in actual town, however it’s nice to watch the seasons change, see the most or frost on a crisp winters day. Frost is pretty selective, there are a lot of days hovering around frost point, just having a car next to the house can mean that one doesn’t freeze up but others do. I notice on the way to work even slightly built up places seem to escape a lot of it.

It’s not all roses though, the roads around here are absolutely filthy from mid October until March. A bit of rain turns them into swamps.

Proper out in the sticks countryside gets greater extremes. It can be very bleak and miserable when the wind is howling, rain lashing down and you can’t see any signs of civilisation other than maybe a distant house light or occasional passing car. BUT sometimes that’s quite nice, you accept it and hunker down in front of a roaring fire.

I've lived in London and out in the sticks in Warwickshire, Gloucestershire and Worcestershire. I like both to be honest; I've had lovely walks across snowy fields to the pub a couple of miles away in Warwickshire and I enjoy the hot/cold of going from office to outdoors to tube train to outdoors to shop etc. Rain spoils it with both though usually affects you less in the city because there are more places to shelter.

Does feel more precarious out in the sticks becasue you're self-reliant so need to make sure your boiler doesn't stop working, your pipes are lagged etc.

That's an interesting tip though Gummi Pflege isn't expensive and lasts for years. Though I'm not sure where mine is so just ordered a new Liqui Moly one from eBay for under £6 delivered: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/127442872058

I enjoy both, right now I love the Christmas lights in London and there’s plenty of covered shopping and social places so if there’s a week of non stop bad weather you can continue as normal rather than getting cabin fever.

Countryside stuff is more rewarding as I tend to do a lot of land management, and that’s where all my cars and other toys are at. In winter a lot of that dies down so I have more time for myself and can enjoy some of my hard work.

If you can stick it in with some other bits to get above the 'free delivery' limit (£35 these days) it's under four quid on Amazon.

Unfortunately it’s not the window rubbers it’s the felt scraper seal along the bottom and the small verticals bit at the front where the wing mirror mounts. A normal bit of frost is no issue, it’s when it’s wet and freezes as actual ice.

Kids were eagerly discussion the possibility of a snow day at dinner yesterday. Woke up to... rain. They were unimpressed.

Yeah not having a good day.

Nose heavy front of the car acted like a pendulum and I went sideways into the corner of the shed on one attempt. Luckily the rock sliders saved my car from any damage and I built that shed to withstand a car sliding into it.
