I know you can get adaptors to physically fit but would a modern EV need to talk to a charger at all ?

You can set the charging kw in the car can't you ?

Dave!
You can use a commando and use the car or app to select kw.

New chargers are required to have smart functions but you don't have to use them.

My current EV lease runs out in March '26 and I'm genuinely considering just buying a cheap shitter petrol while I wait to see what other taxes these cvnts come up with.

Surely EVERY person who has an EV expects to end up paying road tax in some form sooner or later?

Clearly but it is amusing how the government genuinely hates motorists yet view them as an essential tax source.
Wonder what they’d genuinely do if we all decided to become tree shaggers and cycled to work 😂
How about not having a sig at all?

It does follow the same bone headed theme doesn't it.

Electric car market really suffering due to slowing uptake and non-existent secondary market... put up tax!!

Economy stagnant, businesses struggling... put up income tax!!

Of course but in my case it means paying the new VED rates and then this Per Mile charge, which adds hundreds to the annual costs in a short space of time. Just annoying when I'm getting rinsed everywhere else at the same time.

Not like I'm not paying VED and fuel duty on the three bikes either, but at least they're fun

Also, when our R5 is charging in the summer from the solar panels, how would that be recorded? Seems a bit unreasonable to tax us for generating our own power to charge the car.

Did you get the feeling that (m)any other parts of the tax system were based on their reasonableness? ;)

How is the R5 going out of interest? I pitched one to my wife and she quite likes the look of them.

It's great - it's not just a pretty face, it's great fun and seems pretty solid. The one issue which affects all R5s and presumably A290s is that it doesn't like some combos of charger and tariff - Octopus Intelligent Go with our Ohme charger doesn't work properly because the car will go to sleep if it's not given some charge and then won't wake up for the next 5 minute cheap rate interval which Octopus try to feed it. We got round this by disconnecting the link between the car and Octopus and there is due to be an update for the car in the next month or so to fix it. However, it does mean my wife just puts it straight on charge at whatever is the current rate when she gets home; I can't risk it not being charged in the morning because it'll be my fault (not the charger's or the car's or Octopus's) In the summer that didn't matter because it would be charged from the solar; now it's just the 28p/unit rate. So it's costing a bit more but not more than a tank of petrol per month, hence I've not bothered spending time trying to find another workaround.

[And yes, I did think that about tax being reasonable as I typed it  I'll probably end up being taxed heavily on my two eMTBs next...]

It also doesn't seem fair to pay tax for a car you use for a holiday in Europe.

Mileage blockers, maybe invest in a company who make them.

I thought until recently the talk was of pay per mile replacing VED but clearly that would have been too generous. Maybe they can use digital ID to combine everything because it will eventually get ridiculous as on one recent journey I had to pay for dart charge, blackwall tunnel, ULEZ and congestion charge. I think London wants its own pay per mile thing too. It was still cheaper than using the train though.

These “well meaning” ideas need to be properly thought through for the unintended consequences (which aren’t that hard to think of!)

Prices just get passed onto consumers. If you start making it too expensive to get rid of inert waste then you’ll get more illegal dumping. Projects that require more demo will not be financially viable - brownfield sites won’t be worth doing, so more pressure on building on greenbelt. etc…

I hate modern sustainability measures - they’ve just turned into massively paperwork heavy wastes of time. They don’t actually change designs/specifications, they just make people write it all down and calculate numbers.

We used to offer clients an accreditation scheme rating and we got really good at doing it, to the point we could offer it as a free in house thing. Then they changed the criteria, added a load of financial and paperwork hoops to jump through. Now it costs £60k for A consultant to do the same accreditation and we don’t bother offering/doing it because no client wants to pay about £100k once we’ve added in all the work from our end and OH&P.

When we did the Ironbridge site we got an inspection.

We had a list of 800 Hazops to show.

Stainless pipe spec....

Here is the batch number, test certificate, drawing certificate and my sign off.

Ok, prove it.

How do I prove it meets the criteria down to -36 and +80 degrees ?

Well I need to know.

Sigh......

The paperwork is ridiculous, I can't imagine what something like a shopping centre would be like.

But it is the truth. Lying grifters like Farage can make up whatever the hell they like, but you can’t escape the current /previous economic state when taking over.

Farage is now realising he will be held to the same questioning if/when he is in power and it’ll probably go equally as badly…
