I love how they mention swearing can be used as an emotional regulating tool.
So swearing stops murder, excellent. It does make you wonder though what the Essex lot are so angry about all the time..... you cunt.

Like many other habits more wants more, and the effect lessens as the words become less contentious/rude/bad. So you'll need worse and/or now frequent use.V8Granite wrote: Sun Oct 19, 2025 12:40 pm I love how they mention swearing can be used as an emotional regulating tool.

Re: Swearing/blasphemy
The germans invent a new swear word for each specific scenario. We just use the same word but give it a different meaning depending on the word it is adjacent to.
shit
that is shit.
that is the shit.
she’s bat shit
that’s horse shit
that is shit hot
that’s dog shit
that’s bull shit
lose your shit
get shit faced
shoot the shit
get your shit together
etc…
Ze germans would have a whole different word for each!

Re: Swearing/blasphemy
And when we compound words we put a space between each word but the Germans don’t which is why they end up with 30 letter words when getting inventive such as getyourshittogetheryoustupidcvnt.
How about not having a sig at all?

You cvnt.
Re: Swearing/blasphemy
On a related subject, back at uni, a friend wrote her thesis on subconscious misogyny in swearing in the English language.
Ever noticed how words relating to male genitalia tend to be milder than those relating to female genitalia? Dicks and cocks are fools, but there is little implication of malice, but if you behave like a twat or cunt, you are knowingly selfish or malicious.
I thought it was a mildly interesting observation, anyway.

Re: Swearing/blasphemy
Cunt is the only real example of that though imo, calling someone a twat is the same severity as calling someone a penis or a dick. Add the work “fucking” before and they’re almost the same level as cunt.
and calling someone a fanny or a tit is usually a mild, jokey level insult - like knob.
However, with our wonderful language, all of the above can be used as terms of endearment!
