Vodafone outage…

Post by dinny_g »

Quite a bad one today. National, broadband, phone and their website.

Some of the service checking websites (downdetector) suggested it might have effected some others - O2, EE -

any non Vodafone issues??

We were down for two hours across all connectivity. Will move the mobiles to another network.

Don't think so, but it would be too early for the networks to have merged that much infrastructure yet, I think.

Ah, that explains why I briefly couldn't get Google Maps to give me directions as I left the office. It came on 30 seconds up the road so not sure if I was just lucky or the outage wasn't total.

Yeah, smells like a bad BGP push, which to put it simply, is how you tell other networks what your network is.

Get it wrong, and in very basic terms, no-one - not even yourself - knows where all your shit is. And thus can't be reached, nor reach out to anything else.

Fuckin' whoops.

They are mixing their network up with 3 but I've not heard anything to confirm that'd be the cause - it equally could be someone was just having a bad morning, formatted a file wrong and pushed it without enough checks, etc.

I was working at Voda when they had the big network outage in 2010. It was a broadcast storm ultimately. I remember their CTO standing over a colleagues shoulder whilst he was trying to diagnose it in a comms room. The war room was chaos. Nobody had a clue. I think misconfigured spanning tree caused it all.

I'm with Vodafone and their day to day network coverage also seems pretty garbage so perhaps time to change. The outage didn't seem to affect me as I think I was at work throughout the period it was down.

I’m on o2 and generally ok but if you’re in a mildly busy place it becomes unusable. It’s like they have no bandwidth. Keep thinking of changing but they genuinely seem to be the best of a bad bunch. I was in the Apple store a few days ago and the lad working there was impressed as I seemed to be the only customer he had seen that say with phone signal and that was on my ancient iphone 12.
How about not having a sig at all?
