Lotus Carlton 35yr anniversary

Post by mik »

Didn't really fit in the "Decent Cars Youtubes" thread.

35 years is a slightly unusual number to trigger a celebration, but there you go. I count 53 cars in this image -which I initially thought must be a significant % of the original production run - but no, they made 950 in total (Carlton and Omega variants).

I enjoy a car meet and a chinwag with similarly minded others, but I'm not sure how quickly you'd run out of chat when everyone has the same vehicle?

This was taken from TheLotusForum - info is sparse at this point, so I assume more info will be shared over the coming days.....

It's also a shame that the sole silver car wasn't there.

All of them were painted metallic green by the factory. Apparently this one was purchased by the CEO of Lucas, whose wife hated the green. Factory said non-green wasn't possible, so it was therefore repainted (by an independant) before it was used.

Harvey Gibbs has a few Carlton based police special
Interest events.

Just a wonderful car and always stands out as something special at a show.

In my much much younger night clubbing days, there was always a Lotus Carlton parked outside Cairo Jax nightclub in Sheffield. If you dared to get too close the gorillas on the door made sure you stepped away pretty sharpish!

Ah I see an old colleague in the video and his car. I 'knew' of 2 LCs. First was an old colleague, Mike, who you can see at 2:22 reg B31 LLO. Lovely car and used a lot - often brought it to work. He also had a blue VXR8 that often made an appearance.

The second used to be just up the road from the office when I used to work in Redhill. Unfortunately that one looked practically abandoned on the driveway of its residence and didn't move in the 8 years I worked there. I wonder where it is now....

Also didn’t realise they made so many.

One of my mums friends husbands worked there when I was a child, I remember he brought me a folder of press photos / brochures including some for the lotus Carlton, and I did a school project on them 😄

Weird seeing the photos and videos of the gathering, watching them all drive the roads which were part of my daily commute for years.

The Bird in Hand pub they met at used to be pretty decent too, plenty of lotus memorabilia on the walls. Probably been 15 years since I’ve been there though!

Just to close the loop - I see there is a long vid covering the event.

I've not watched it, but will probably try and catch up with some of the Q&A panel sessions (including at-the-time MD Mike Kimberley, Designer Julian Thompson, Chief Dynamics Engineer Tony Shute etc etc.)

Well it appears that maybe I'm the outlier. :?

Recent meet where 14 of the 23 Evora GT430's sold in the UK came together. To talk about all things Lotus. Evora. GT430. I guess?

Following this I've just seen another thread where a meet is being planned exclusively for the Evora GT410 (about 102 cars sold I think)?

First one I ever saw on the road was also being driven pretty much flat out
Island leading on to a mile of straight road between Telford and Newport
On way home in Manta GTE and having a performance comparison moment with my friend in his SteamIron MR2 …… we’d just come out the island and were employing maximum power as you do …… and suddenly noticed in my mirror that behind my friend’s black MR2 and closing VERY RAPIDLY was a black* Vauxhall - oh no, an unmarked police car???? :o
Before we’d shed much speed we were passed by a LC already well over a ton and still accelerating
That lovely smell of a hot new performance car - expensive oil and hot engine/brakes

Bit of relief that it wasn’t the men with pointed heads mixed with sheer amazement at the performance on view ( this was early 90s so 0-100 in 10 seconds was very impressive )

Another friend of mine worked at local Vauxhall/Opel dealer and about a week later was chatting to him outside on the forecourt ….. when same car pulled up. Local footballer Dalian Atkinson who was actually happy to have a laugh and joke about the car.

* Yes Imperial Green but it looked black on a sunny day in the RVM

Heading off topic, but that very much reminded me of my first on-road with a (whale tail) cossie.

New bypass. I was trying to make progress in my MG Maestro 2.0 EFi. I’d spotted it behind me picking off a few cars. Looked great.

I rounded a bend hoping that the long straight ahead would be clear - it was. As I pulled out to pass a dawdler, the Cossie (now with 2 cars separating me from them) also pulled out. I was only half way past my target car when the Cossie loomed large in my mirrors, and as I pulled back in post-overtake, it felt like Mr Sulu had just activated Warp Factor 9 > Sierra properly fooked off into the distance.

Reference both of those tales, this happened exiting Shelsley one year. They looked amazing in the mirrors

I used to drive past Paul Matty lotus before it closed and actually saw a lot of these, they have a real presence and should be high on any fantasy garage.

To be fair, there’s always something to chat about with fellow Lotus owners - how did you fix that? What’s wrong with that? What can i do to stop that breaking? etc….
