Is someone here a sign writer?

Post by Zonda_ »

If memory serves someone on here does or did sign writing. I have an issue I can’t solve, the previous owner of my car had the name of their business on the rear screen. It’s been removed before I got it and is invisible until the sun hits it at a certain angle then you can see the wording clearly. I’ve tried all sorts to get it off, glass cleaner, glass polish, even acetone but nothing makes a difference. Any ideas?

That was @Gwaredd, but it has been yonks since he was on here.

Stupid question: which side of the glass was it on? Could the residue be on the inside?

That’s the annoying thing, I can’t tell so I’ve tried everything on both sides.

That's odd. I've nothing better to add.

Get a new Stanley blade and use it to scrape over all the glass. If you don’t have a blade holder thing, just fold a bit of electrical tape over the back edge and it’ll be comfortable enough to hold.

Edit: spray with a bit of windolene or similar if you want some loob

You can get plastic Stanley blades too which work well, I use them on my fish tank and have used them on the car before.

Have you considered just writing “not” above the sign?

I wonder if it is UV discolouration but for the area where the sign was. In that case I'm not sure how possible it would be to fix that.

Rear screen off eBay not an option? I'm sure not the cheapest solution but may be by the time you factor in your own sanity!

Leave a coat on the rear shelf, and come park it round the corner from me in Stockton. Someone will be helpful enough to remove the glass for you before your insurance company come to replace it. Hope this helps

On a serious note try some solvents like white spirit on a rag, but tape off the area around the screen so it doesn’t damage your seals and paintwork, but it may be the same as paintwork where the area around has uv damage and micro scratching so nothing will solve the issue

I’m leaning towards UV damage, just tried a Stanley blade and white spirit and no difference.
