FTAO of Coffee Whankhorz
Re: FTAO of Coffee Whankhorz
I have a cheapo coffee grinder for a filter machine. For espresso I use a nespresso machine. It’s better than a jar of instant. Could not be fucked with any of that over complicated shite

For some reason I feel that should be made from Lego

Re: FTAO of Coffee Whankhorz
When I cracked the base of my wet and dry grinder attachment for the Bamix, I bought a s/h replacement one of ebay for £14, but then subsequently repaired the original and designated it a dedicated coffee grinder. Using supermarket beans it makes a pretty damn good cup of coffee. Definitely noticeably better than like-for-like pre-ground supermarket coffee (e.g. Taylors etc)
The stuff I buy from the specialist (Janszoon blend from Artisan Roast, if anyone cares) is better when they grind it, IMO. Seems to just have an extra X factor.
These very unscientific opinions are based on coffee from the very gentle vintage Russell Hobbs percolator. With the moka pot, there is a lot less difference.

I may have just gone and done something rather rash.

Insanely expensive, but I've already got it making superb espresso with bang average beans.
Rationale for purchase thus:
1.) We really don't want a big coffee machine taking up our fairly limited remaining counter space.
2.) I like our Bialetti but it's not proper espresso and I want that.
3.) I like the routine and interaction of the Bialetti, I don't want to just press a button.
4.) When reading about it someone mentioned that because there are less adjustments that can be made relative to a good coffee machine, you can more easily hone in on tweaking it to get a good cup with different beans. That resonated with me.
5.) I just think it's a fabulous bit of engineering, and feels lovely and heavy and solid.
6.) I think it's cool, so ner!

I thought "all" percolators were now frowned upon due to boiling water reaching the grinds?Nefarious wrote: Thu Sep 25, 2025 3:09 pm These very unscientific opinions are based on coffee from the very gentle vintage Russell Hobbs percolator.

Re: FTAO of Coffee Whankhorz
My Dad still uses a percolator (he's used one for as long as I can remember, since I was a child) and I've never felt compelled to spit out his coffee in disgust...

Only if they are magic coffee beans MrF

A test of supermarket coffees, very timely for Dunc's me device.

Mine is this style:mik wrote: Wed Oct 01, 2025 3:38 pmI thought "all" percolators were now frowned upon due to boiling water reaching the grinds?Nefarious wrote: Thu Sep 25, 2025 3:09 pm These very unscientific opinions are based on coffee from the very gentle vintage Russell Hobbs percolator.(I will not be surprised however if you advise that you have modified yours.... )

Rather than the drip-through style.
The water boils in a little chamber at the bottom, then passes though a long tube surrounded by water, so I assume it has cooled significantly by the time it reaches the coffee grounds (at the top).
I was equally sceptical about the 70's tech, but the taste test beats everything. IMO, the percolator makes the best "sunday morning" cup of coffee (i.e. super smooth, sweet and rounded). There are times when I want the more aggressive (sharper, more bitter notes) taste of an espresso-based coffee, and that's what the moka pot is for.

Re: FTAO of Coffee Whankhorz
Nothing wrong with good 70's tech - I've got a stapler that my dad bought home in the early 80's from work (and at that point, was ancient) - used it through school, college and lives on my office bookshelf and is is still the household stapler

I have a mate that puts 2 tablespoons of ground coffee in a mug, pours boiling water on and drinks it. Sometimes stirs with aforementioned tablespoon, sometimes doesn't.

The Evo forum really is a shadow of its former self. I remember when the internet was for the elite and now they seem to let any spastic on

I totally buy all of your logic - it's why we still haven't progressed to a machine, and I like the consistency and simplicity of the method.
That looks
