Can you get "bird proof" squirrel feeders?

Post by mik »

We have a few recent sightings of red squirrels in the garden, and I'd like to encourage them.

I've already got feeders for both seeds and peanuts. These attract a great range of birds, and I've eventually found designs that are highly resistant to jackdaws/crows. (Not that I dislike these breeds, but they roam in packs and will empty some feeders in a matter of minutes). I would like the birds to continue using the existing feeders.

When I try to search for squirrel feeders that might therefore be somehow "bird resistant", the search engine either mangles my request and offers squirrel-resistant bird feeders  , or just provides squirrel feeders that look as if they are pretty "open" - that I'd expect birds to be able to access pretty easily :?:

No idea what about that prevents birds from landing on the projecting platform.

Absolutely nothing. There is a sprung roof that has to be lifted to get to the contents, so the smaller birds won't be able to access it, but I suspect a crow/jackdaw will probably work that out as quickly as a squirrel..... :?

You need to invent one.

Base it on a low-power SoC with a touchscreen. It releases nuts based on the correct response to a modified CAPTCHA. E.g. "Are you a squirrel? Tap all pictures of squirrels/nuts". It would sell like hotcakes to the wildlife-friendly. Combine it with an app, a badly secured webcam and a global leaderboard and you can retire early on the proseeds (ahem. Soz) of the inevitable INO (Initial Nut Offering).

Not at all, we had ones going in the Hedgehog house which is up a ramp, round a bend. They just wander in.

Just give the birds enough food and feed the squirrel near where you see it most.
