Torque Wrench

Post by Mito Man »

I have a tiny one which goes up to 24nm https://www.sealey.co.uk/product/563720 ... ive-2-24nm and then https://www.screwfix.com/p/dewalt-torqu ... lsrc=aw.ds which does 75-345nm.
When working on my Mito it seemed like everything wanted to be done up from 30-40nm

So any recommendations for something in the 25-75nm range?

I've got three Teng torque wrenches but I can't remember what they are

I'd get one of those.

Norbar all the way, excellent wrenches.

For that you would want a 3/8th drive though I’m guessing.

You made me go and check...

1492AG-E for 5-25 Nm
1292AG-EP for 40-210 Nm
1292AG-E4 for 70-350 Nm

I lust for a ¾" wrench but they're a bit spendy and I don't need one.

So yeah, 30-40 is a weird no-mans land. But honestly, it's a piddling torque, so it can't be anything important, I'd just do it by feel. I only take torque settings seriously for head bolts. Even wheel nuts/bolts I only started using a torque wrench relatively recently and through decades of guessing I never had a wheel fall off.

It was all the important bits! Camshaft tensioner, the water pump bolts, crank pulley. I put a dab of blue Threadlock to put my mind at rest.

Looking at the X5 that all needs similar torque values but it’s an aluminium block too so I really don’t want to rely on myself just making “click” noises and a grunt

I think I’ll go for the Teng one, the Norbar is a bit rich for me

The one I linked is a 3/8" though, like Dave! suspected. Have you got 3/8" sockets ?

I do, the small Sealey I have is 3/8. I just need a good set of 3/8 E torx and I’ll be good to go.

It’s ok, it’s fine, no worries, it’s just a little click, I don’t even care, it’s just a number, did I say I don’t care and I’m fine.

Fine fine fine fine click click fine.

I have a nice Norbar, but generally only use it for wheel bolts or strut / subframe bolts.

Normal 8/10/13mm is just by hand, never broken or stripped anything which wasn’t already broken.

When doing the waterpump on the mito I was more concerned that there’s no actual gasket or seal, you just have to apply a bead of rtv which is annoying as they don’t include it, plus you want to leave it to cure before refilling the system. I had zero concern that the bolts holding it in were under or over torqued.

No one is forcing you to go out on foot-pounding the streets for appropriate puns Dave, we wouldn’t want to screw you up, you might end up bolting, or going nuts. Although it would be funny, in a twisted way.
