Bikes went for overtakes on zigzags, of a van signalling right, after weaving from nearside to offside, and 2 of them went through a red light to do it.

Saw basically the same accident in Brighton the other day

Car indicating to turn right waiting at a red light cross roads

Delivery scooter comes flying up the outside of the queuing traffic as the lights go green

Car turns right as the scooter gets to his rear 3/4ers and got knocked off

Car driver clearly shaken by it

Brilliant, making yourself more in the way because you fancy a slow chat makes you a bit of a knob.

I'd rather cyclists go slowly; they're easier to overtake. And it's not as if you give them less room when they're riding in single file than two abreast.

I definitely do give them less room when overtaking, it’s about 2 metres isn’t it ?

Lots of roads around here where they are a metre from the edge, then at least 1.5 metres between bar ends and another 2 metres on top leaves hardly any space for a car.

If you don't go fully across the white line for a single cyclist then you're not giving them the required amount of space. If they are two abreast, that's all you can do. So in reality you need the same amount of space to overtake one as two abreast.

So it’s too close to be 1m away for 1 cyclist but ok for two ?

That doesn’t make much sense to me, I know you adjust speed etc but it’s still a choice by the cyclist to be a (not all the time granted) bigger obstruction than needed.

Too many factors at play but I suppose if you overtake as you would like to be overtaken then you aren’t going far wrong.

I give people the space gent need, I just find it odd that it varies depending on the people. A lot of lanes I drive on have no centre marking.

yeah, roads are different widths and cyclists ride in different positions in the lane. There’s a pretty simple rule in the highway code, and it isn’t “If you're entirely in the other lane then you aren't going to be convicted of a close pass”.

If you’re closer than 1.5m passing a pair of cyclists side by side but you’re entirely over the white line, it’s exactly the same as cars passing the other way. You won’t have an issue. But keep on pursuing a strawman argument

• leave at least 1.5 metres when overtaking cyclists at speeds of up to 30mph, and give them more space when overtaking at higher speeds
  pass horse riders and horse-drawn vehicles at speeds under 10 mph and allow at least 2 metres of space
• allow at least 2 metres of space and keep to a low speed when passing a pedestrian who is walking in the road (for example, where there is no pavement)

I think the "leave as much space as when overtaking a car" bit confuses people. You go entirely in the other lane when overtaking a car because the car is already 2 metres wide.
Granted, 2 cyclists side by side you're going ENTIRELY in the other lane.

In that situation, you still have to follow the highway code:

“ If the required space cannot be given due to road conditions or traffic, overtaking should be postponed until it is safe to do so. “
