I’ve been using it a lot more recently as a blank page filler. E.g. a way to quickly spitball some ideas that I can take away and make my own. I’m working on making my prompts to get better results, but a lot of the outputs are still generic trash to me.

When I visited the Porsche Museum in 2016 for the 40 years of transaxle Porsche exhibition. One of the cars they had on display, was a prototype rear engine 944, AWD from 1981/82. Still 4 cylinder. I think they were prototyping it for racing. Apparently they cancelled the project to "Free up resources for the Group B Study" which must have been the 959.

They're going to use AI to determine what's poisonous based on an algorithm that scores sentences based on game logic, and which to this day has difficulty with basic maths.
Not saying that drug "testing" by "AI" (how many fucking quotes am I going to need in this sentence) isn't dodgy but last year's noble prize in Chemistry was won by a group using machine learning for protein behaviour prediction.

I’m hoping it turns out it’s not vaccines, not because that’s true and we already known it, but because then he’ll have to come up with something even more insane like carpet or standing one one leg in the shower

So it's not necessarily stupid, but I'll admit increased skepticism about anything happening the US is rightly quite high at the moment.
Machine learning to spot differences, similarities etc and speed up things via inference etc is absolutely valid.
But I have mental images of them just sending PDFs of research papers into ChatGPT and asking which is best, because, as you note, look at the absolute fucking state of the US at the moment.

I subscribe to the New Scientist magazine - ai has theoretically come up with several thousand new materials and we have now created 20-30 from that list irl.. it’s not perfect but highly repetitive simulations with slight variations can be effective, and our current ai are perfect for these calculations
Yes, Ai does seem to be the current buzz word to describe the sort of things computers have been doing for decades under other terms.
Funny how the mining of fake coins and the utter waste of resources massively accelerated the compute power / Watt of electricity ratio and is now making them more useful for real world things than ever.
This is the scary bit of ai, the sheer amount of power it needs is unreal, and so much of it is useless requests, like the current trend of make me look like a kids toy so I don’t miss out on my 25 followers thinking I’m cool

It is a lot, but in comparison to heavy industry it's still small
