The Lesotho tariff is also due to trumps formula- there’s a large trade difference, with Lesotho exporting a lot more to the USA than they import back in.RobYob wrote: Mon Apr 07, 2025 10:50 pm Perun on YouTube usually does defence economics based content but as this is now a trade war he's dived into Trump's tariff tantrum and boy did I not realise how deep the stupid went. The take down is savage and funny/tragic.
The penguin tax I knew about along with the chatgpt calculation formula and the base rate of 10% even if the US had a trade surplus.
What I didn't know was the tariff formula inputs were only goods exchange numbers, not services! Absolutely batshit insane.
It gets worse, and maybe I'm really behind the news here, the tariff rate of 60% on tiny Lesotho is entirely due to the economic support previously given by the US!
He closes with "how to win a trade war"
-Focus on a clear long term objective
-Talk before opening fire
-Keep your allies on-board
WTAF.
Want more evidence of that stupidity then look no further than Lesotho
The reason for the difference? First of all the people are extremely poor so don’t have money to buy American, and as for the exports Lesotho has a diamond mine.
Re: Trump
I’ve seen a new stupid result of trumps rule- in Florida they’re struggling to fill low paid jobs now all the undocumented immigrants have been thrown out, so what’s the solution? Relax child labour laws- including looking at allowing kids as young as 14 year olds to work night shifts on school nights if they’re home schooled, but also eroding their working rights too, removing guaranteed meal breaks for 16/17 year olds

I’d never heard of Perun, but thank you - watched a chunk of this over breakfast. Some great analysis and observations.RobYob wrote: Mon Apr 07, 2025 10:50 pm Perun on YouTube usually does defence economics based content but as this is now a trade war he's dived into Trump's tariff tantrum and boy did I not realise how deep the stupid went.

He is massively wrong Dinny, and on so many levels it would take a long post to break down all the points. And so are you, because you're literally criticising my work - even though I'm not on the scale of the people mentioned - most content creators including myself do have standards and regularly turn down brand offers.dinny_g wrote: Tue Apr 08, 2025 8:14 am He's not wrong though Gav...![]()

I have a trade deficit with my local Chinese restaurant so next time I place an order I will make myself pay twice as much because that will encourage me to become a chef and build a takeaway in my shed.

And another thing missing from this fantasy return to manufacturing - US dominance of heavy industry in the 1950s owes quite a lot to having recently dropped high explosives on every facility in Japan or Germany capable of manufacturing a ball bearing.

Come on now Gav, and be honest - if some shyster company offered you life-changing money to sponsor something you didn't entirely or morally agree with, but had no real impact on anyone that resulted in harm - you wouldn't pedal it on your channel?
