Dune

Ok, I’m not going to lie, I had no clue what was going on for a lot of it but my God what a stunning piece of Cinema. You don’t have to watch it as such - you can just look at it - and marvel at the visuals, the music. Stunning! Simply stunning.

Fuck it, I’m going to give it the full 10 out of 10

Dune 2 - as above, didn’t understand it, was incredible to watch and listen to. My soundbar and sub had a field day with it…

I’m going to go 9 out of 10 for the ending…


Can someone explain because I think I’ve missed something but not sure what…

Existential horror allegory about missing chances and trapping yourself in a life that doesn’t make sense (I think).

More an experience than a movie and if you prefer a clear plot and resolution, it’s not for you.

I loved it though, Justice Smith is phenomenal in the main role and the ending hits like a panic attack.

If you fancy something a bit different it’s worth a look.

Fancied watching this one for a while, pleased to hear it's a bit off the wall

The Gorge on Apple TV+... Great premise, but another one which seems to not really know what to do with it and it all goes a bit derivative as well as mashing up sci-fi mystery, a shoot 'em up and a rom-com. A bit all over the place but Anya Taylor-Joy is captivating and charming as she is in everything and it's got a Reznor/Ross soundtrack, so I'm in.

It ends up as a middle of the road thing which is ok but could have been much more. Also a bit weird that Apple seem to have a great eye for TV shows but a lot of their film output is tosh.

We went to see Bridget Jones - Mad About The Boy at a Valentine screening last week. The first 10-15 mins before the opening credits (which I'd forgotten hadn't appeared yet) is scene setting and made me think the film was going to be very like Peter's Friends - lots of morose reminiscing. But it was way better than that and actually quite enjoyable. If you're going to watch one British chick-flick this year it's probably worth your time.

My initial thought is that he does love her but she's just a normal soldier etc and he's basically a God now the prophesy is fulfilled so they've no chance of a happy life so he makes it easier for her etc...

Better Man - the Robbie Williams biopic. Brilliant.

I know. Nobody was more surprised than me. It looks stunning and has some really lovely visuals and subtle touches throughout. It's also a very honest telling of his story so far. Funny, touching and very entertaining.

Yeah, great movie. Really beautiful art and design and it felt quite honest and human (ironic).

Mickey17 significantly weirder than I was expecting from the trailers and far more Red Dwarf than Edge of Tomorrow.

Not flawless but still enjoyable, felt like it want to go in a few different directions at once and had a few instances of tonal whiplash even within a single scene.

Mark Ruffalo possibly ate a bit too much of the scenery, you could see the foundations.

Might have to read the book it's based on.

Lion

True story of a small street kid in India who gets separated from his brother one night, setting off a chain of events which sees him adopted to Tasmania. Many years later he tries to find his home.

Harrowing in places with an unbelievable performance from 8 year old Sunny Pawar the lead character as a Kid. I'd give it 9 out of 10.

The stand out moment was was at the end when the closing credits stated that 80,000 children go missing every year in India. I have to question why a country has a space programme while this is happening to their children.

Anthropoid

Another true story, this time about a group of exiled Czech paratroopers, who land in occupied Czechoslovakia with a plot to assassinate the "Butcher of Prague" - Reinhard Heydrich. Good cast - Cillian Murphy, Toby Jones, Jamie Dooran but it's pretty slow moving and very very bleak. However, the look is amazing as it's filmed without using Steadicams and in Super16mm film with Anamorphic lenses giving a very gritty real feel. And the climax in the Church is very tense.

Doran and Murphy have a lot of scenes together and one thing is very apparent is just how much better an actor Cillian Murphy is...

Horizon - An American Saga. Chapter 1

As I have mentioned many times, I do love a good western so this got my interest. It's had a bit of a troubled history as it was the project that resulted in Costner leaving Yellowstone ( resulting in the cobbled together ending of that series ) and they've delayed the release of Chapter 2 (there's 4 in total) as there wasn't enough of a buzz (read: they lost too much money) around it's theatrical release.

It has a very good cast and is well made but it does suffer from some poor editing, leaving you very confused as to what's going on. I'm guessing this is due to the overall length ( it's over 3 hours) and several connecting scenes must have been left out.

Overall, I'd give it 6 out of 10 that's enough for me to keep an eye out for Chapter 2.

However, given the issues with Chapter 2, Chapter 3 being hampered by the writers strike and Chapter 4 no where near ready, I'd be surprised if this gets completed

The Brutalist

I can't remember the last time I watched a film that was so long it had an intermission and I was unsure that a story about a Hungarian brutalist architect who escapted the Nazis could carry my attention span through the truly epic 3 hours and 30 minutes runtime. However, it really is a fanatic film, the performance by Adrian Brody as Lazslo Toth is absolutely magnetic, he truly embodied every last inch of pain of the main character. I was hooked from start to finish, which for such a long film is a massive accomplishment. One of the best films I've wathced in a long time, and Brody absolutey deserves that best actor oscar.

Anora

It's like a spoof crime film with crazy Russians and a minor romantic undertone. It's noisy, brash, a bit funny in places and exceptionally chaotic.

As I have mentioned many times, I do love a good western

Despite this assertion, I’ve never watched Tombstone so, given the sad news of Val Kilmer’s passing, I thought it was about time.

Kilmer is indeed, excellent. A brilliant performance all round.

But the film itself is, well, a bit disappointing if I’m honest. Formulaic, a bit cliched, even taking into account it’s 32 years old

Thought I'd pay respect to Val Kilmer by watching Willow with the kids this evening. For all the cheese and wonky sets I enjoyed it and they seemed to too, good old fashioned adventure with a brief bit of body horror thrown in (Troll Egg, wtf). Now to go on an 80-90s PG action binge, I'm queuing up The Rocketeer next.
