Is it April 1st?
Is it April 1st?
Nope it’s not. Fuck that, how long until an accident is accredited to a pop up ad popping up when it shouldn’t?

It's been talked about for a while. Massively stupid idea on so many levels.

Yup. I'm sure it'll all be perfectly safe, nothing to see (well, actually...) here.
It follows the trend of everything being a data mining front to serve more and more ads, see also "smart" TVs.

The more I see about new cars, the less I want to get one.

This. My van slammed on the brakes for a second the other day when someone stopped a bit sharpish at the line from a side road, then my golf wouldn’t let you move the car if the door was a bit open.
Even those little intrusions annoyed me - so speed limiters, warning messages, ding dong warnings, lane assist and now even bloody adverts just remove any desire for a brand new car!

My Range Rover would do something slightly similar. There’s a T junction near here where the main road takes the 90° turn and the road that looks straight on is the side road. If it spotted a car in the side road before you’d started to steer for the corner it would bong loudly and flash up a warning on the dash. Distracting you from exactly the thing it’s warning you about.

What year is your van Rich? I've had similar in the Superb (2019). Usually when there's a car full of people just for additional embarrassmentRich B wrote: Fri Feb 14, 2025 10:07 amThis. There are a few new cars I'd be interested in, but it would certainly put me off buying if the above couldn't be switched off easily or even coded out.

I could imagine coding that out would count as a declarable modification or invalidate the policy.Swervin_Mervin wrote: Fri Feb 14, 2025 11:05 amWhat year is your van Rich? I can imagine CyclingMik3y already getting in a frothy excited lather about this..... "I just caught you buddy - watching an ad when you were moving.... yes 0.1mph is still moving.... I have it on camera - your front wheel rotated by at least 8 degrees whilst your ad was on the screen - thats 3 points for you and you'll be on youtube later"
Re: Is it April 1st?
I almost ended up with a white van in my boot during the first drive the the 740d. A pedestrian 10+ meters away stepped off the payment into the road very briefly while passing a man and a dog, enough for the nanny state to brake and gave the van driver a brown trouser moment.Rich B wrote: Fri Feb 14, 2025 10:07 amThis. The VW t7 is also a lot worse than the the golf r, considering the golf was a 2014 car and the t7 is a decade newer, thats pretty poor. The cruise control looks out for speed limit signs and slows down. Its picked sharply braked without warning to 50 on the motorway a few times which is dangerous, especially when its picked up on a sign incorrectly.

its a 2021 t6.1, it’s not too bad, but it does flash up messages about changing gear/taking a break/etc which are a little irritating!Swervin_Mervin wrote: Fri Feb 14, 2025 11:05 amWhat year is your van Rich? Re: Is it April 1st?
The 2023 320D I had in Santander was a surprisingly nice car when you turned the lane assist off. With it on the roads co fused it and it even steered left and then back right when it couldn’t decide if the cement dust on the road was a line or not.
The 2024 120 (I think ) was shit in many other ways but the lane assist worked much better where I didn’t feel the need to turn it off.
Dave!

Ah, thankfully we don't have that. Yours must be a step on again.Rich B wrote: Fri Feb 14, 2025 1:09 pmits a 2021 t6.1, it’s not too bad, but it does flash up messages about changing gear/taking a break/etc which are a little irritating!Swervin_Mervin wrote: Fri Feb 14, 2025 11:05 amWhat year is your van Rich? We had some little Seat thing on hire last summer holiday, and that had the full shabang, incl lane assist. Honestly, driving on a Portuguese motorway through the centre of Lisbon at 2am after a full day at work, and a 3hr queue through passport control at the airport, was not a good mix with all of those "driver aids". I don't usually drink from the minibar in hotels, but I emptied it of beer when we got there at about 2.30am
