Chipex - anyone used the kit?

£35 for the kit is a lot, and i am sure "blending solution" is something cheap like alcohol / acetone, but it does seem to work as a "system". My chip repairs have always looked like chip repairs.... woulld be nice to do a more pro job.

I would agree but just clarify that paintwork includes tippex/tyre sidewalls

Mik, try Dr. ColourChip (https://www.drcolourchip.co.uk/) if you want to patch up stone chips. I've used it on the sides of the M235i and the results are good.

Well I’ve ordered some Chipex. It is almost half the price of Dr Colorchip and whilst colorchip gave good results on my Mito 8 years ago a lot of it has come off and the few bits still left are a different shade of red so will see how the Chipex does.

Initial review whenever I use it, plus a follow up in 8 years. Set your alarms folks

So I’ve briefly used it with mixed results. Gave the car a quick machine polish on Saturday in preparation for it. First used it on a big scratch where I noticed that the paint they gave is darker, or maybe the car paint has faded after 14 years of sun


Despite trying 3 times I couldn’t build up the paint thick enough to get it level.

It did work very well for the normal small chips on the bonnet


Bonnet is now pretty perfect.

The front bumper really needs a respray I think as it’s completely peppered so I just poured a few big blobs of paint on my fingers and smeared it on the area illuminated by the torch


It did paint over most of the blemishes but the issue is each chip has made a tiny divot in the soft plastic bumper and again the hard part is getting the paint level so you still see the chips from the reflection of the light even though it’s painted in.
Also I don’t think the 30ml paint supplied will even do the whole front bumper so I will leave it till last once I’ve done the rest of the car.

How are the results of that any different to an £8 pot from Halfords?

Doesn’t take an age to do, sure you can get the same results spending ages with cocktail stick dabbing touch up paint in but with this you basically just wipe on across an area if there’s loads and wipe off.
Also I was never sure about the Halfords version which comes with a separate primer, paint and lacquer - I would just mix the paint and lacquer and not bother with the primer as it would end up too ‘tall’ applying them individually

Yet with this kit your main complaint is that it's too thin and you can't build up the layers

You're never going to get an invisible result with any of these kits whether they're £5, £30 or £50. All you're doing is making them a bit less distracting from a distance until it gets bad enough it needs repainting properly.

But I’d rather have it too thin than a blob of paint which is more noticeable - still worked a treat on the bonnet. Also there’s no way I’m getting a car resprayed when it’s worth less than the cost of the respray so it’ll do.
