930 Tag Turbo non fence-sitting Poll
930 Tag Turbo non fence-sitting Poll
Already posted elsewhere by other members, but In case you need a reference:
I can absolutely see the appeal of the Tag. Quite a lot. But for driving - the Ruf is way more attractive to me.
And the Tag sounds great - as many V6’s do - but it doesn’t sound like a flat6 even if Henry says it does.

Re: 930 Tag Turbo non fence-sitting Poll
Note: for the poll to work we have to imagine that these 10 (11?) cars will be driven as opposed to just stuck in a collection.
Re: 930 Tag Turbo non fence-sitting Poll
I don't like the idea of taking the flat 6 out - if you have about a dozen ex-F1 engines, why not use them in something else? Maybe a 1980s F1 car which doesn't have an engine; plenty of those around.
Re: 930 Tag Turbo non fence-sitting Poll
As there can’t be many ways to daily drive an actual F1 engine, I say the Tag out of those 2.
For any other 911 then the Tuthill is my current favourite.

I’ve been thinking about it more and since it’s a restomod I want one with an RWB kit to really annoy people

Re: 930 Tag Turbo non fence-sitting Poll
I think it's ace although had I that level of cash I'd probably want a few extra new reengineered engines as well to go for that 1000hp quality power level.
But the plaque listing where each original engine raced is CAF.

Might as well do a boosted K20 swap into the bargain.ZedLeg wrote: Tue Feb 04, 2025 11:51 am I’ve been thinking about it more and since it’s a restomod I want one with an RWB kit to really annoy people![]()

Re: 930 Tag Turbo non fence-sitting Poll
If I had the money to choose, it'd be an n/a Ruf personally, but from those two the CTR gets my vote.
Re: 930 Tag Turbo non fence-sitting Poll
I'm waiting until I know more (the info might already be out there, I haven't looked), e.g. how much of the original F1 engine is actually used? I don't dislike it, but it isn't the mule. If only Henry could drive that to let us know how they compare

Re: 930 Tag Turbo non fence-sitting Poll
Even if it's the whole engine and they've just dialled back the fuelling and boost at the top end, and made it more tractable at the bottom end, it's still not really the "same" engine - it has a totally different character.
It's like the difference between a supermodel in the 1980s, and then that same supermodel in the 2020s in long after the alcoholism and coke bloat has set in - but likely still just as highly strung and troublesome (dialling back the fuelling and boost on an F1 engine isn't going to magically make it go 20,000 miles between rebuilds).
It also sounds pretty shit because it has a silenced exhaust and is limited to 9k rpm. That supermodels has a smokers cough.
Ruf for me please, that's a car you literally can drive regularly without thinking about the £40k interim service it'll need to stop it from lunching itself.

It’s an 80’s 911 with an F1 engine. Why are you talking

Re: 930 Tag Turbo non fence-sitting Poll
It will be so far from the original F1 engine as to be almost unrecognisable, the only common parts will be the block head and rocker cover castings. Turning a race engine into a road car engine isn't a case of turning down the boost a bit despite what the PR would have you believe.Beany wrote: Tue Feb 04, 2025 8:32 pm Even if it's the whole engine and they've just dialled back the fuelling and boost at the top end, and made it more tractable at the bottom end, it's still not really the "same" engine - it has a totally different character.
Re: 930 Tag Turbo non fence-sitting Poll
It's cool. So is the RUF. I know the poll is about the TAG, but FWIW I'd take the RUF out of those two... and of course the 911K above both. I think I'd rate the RUF (and maybe the TAG) above a Singer though.
Where's the poll for best 911 restomod? Not that it's needed, the 911K wins.

Re: 930 Tag Turbo non fence-sitting Poll
I did think it seemed surprisingly driveable for a 1980s 1.5l V6 with massive boost.dan wrote: Wed Feb 05, 2025 8:44 amIt will be so far from the original F1 engine as to be almost unrecognisable, the only common parts will be the block head and rocker cover castings. You’d buy one because it’s a cool thing to have, which is why I wouldn’t feel bad having one with a tacky widebody kit
