I’m sure there are a lot of people with £30k to spend on something fun and rwd who absolutely would have both the gt86 and m2 on their radar.

It’s the classic thing, something newer, maybe more reliable, still under factory warranty, or something a bit older but more refined and miles faster.

Would a 7 year older M2 actually feel much older to sit in and drive? He said the gt86 interior felt pretty ancient.

That's a typical Toyota thing. They look 15 years old when new and have the plastics from a 90's car.

I watched the video, it’s typical 20 year old looking Toyota interiors. Reminds me of the taxis in south east asia.

As Jobbo said if you want an M2 you’re not really considering an 86.

Inflation adjusted it’s the same price as a new MR2 in 1985.

Nice design doesn’t have to mean more cost - they could have tried to integrate it into one coherent look.

I think that Toyota just aren’t geared to make interiors for the UK market tastes, because it’s such a tiny market compared to asia for them.

i suppose the cost saving comes from the fact it just looks like a parts bin special, made up of whatever switchgear/screens/etc they had lying around.

No thought for how it would look together. Nothing looks like it came from the same family in terms of shape, there’s black switches, silver switches, chrome switches… grey painted bits, some chrome surrounds, circular vents with chrome bits, black rectangular vents without, etc…. it’s a mess!

As Jobbo said if you want an M2 you’re not really considering an 86.

7 years warranty on them too? - if you want a cheap, simple RWD car it does tick a lot of boxes.

I haven't watched the vid yet but this is a good point. I was thinking, surely even Kia interiors are much better than this these days... then I checked what an EV6 costs and they're >10k more. Thing is, this is basic ICE tech so it should be possible to do a Kia esque interior for that kind of money given the saving on battery packs/hybrid tech, etc..

The M2 thing is a weird comparison, I don't see them being on the same list for most people. The previous-gen M2 interior is good - no way it would look or feel as-dated as the GT86 one.

I doubt the running costs are that much more. GR86 economy of 31mpg on the screen in Harry's test car; I'm sure people get that from M2s without any difficulty (Rich?)

Servicing of an M2 will be on BMW's relatively sensible time/mileage intervals. I'm not sure on the GR86 but the GR Yaris is on 6 months/6000 miles so far more regular.

I would expect the 86 to be much less stress to maintain than the gr yaris. It’s less mechanically complicated.

i can see there would be a crossover, but i don’t consider the GR86 as the obvious rival to the M2. The MX5 is the obvious competitor to the GR86 and the Cayman is probably the obvious competitor to the M2 in my eyes.

Given the type of person who buys these cars- gym goers who don’t have a clue but want a flashy daily- I’d say the gr86 competitor is actually a new shape m135i, or not necessarily even a performance car, like a 2.0tdi s line a5 or something
