DVLA approved list of colours

I received a nice letter from the DVLA when trying to change the colour of my MX5 on the V5C. They have a limited range of colour descriptions which I have scanned - they won't accept 'Teal' despite that being 3M's proper name of my colour.



I'd not seen this before. It should in theory not be possible to register a car with a different colour to this selection.

Interesting, it's quite limited, yet does cover most bases in a very broad sense. Also necessary so that people don't start saying their car is "Hearing aid beige" or similar, regardless of how funny that would be. What are you going to opt for? Turquoise?

Could you argue that it is multicoloured as teal is a mix?

They all look white to me.

Reminds me of when Mrs Newt was trying to decide on what shade to paint the living room and ordered 30 tester pots which basically all had the same shade.

It's Turquoise.

As Gav said, it's easier to lump everyone into to the nearest colour category rather than every nerd going "but mines not red, is competizione red!"

DVLA are difficult enough as it is, don't encourage them to complicate it even more!

Technically the selection should have Cyan on it (which is the spectrum between green and blue) as that would cover Teal and Turquoise. But I think Turquoise more clearly covers it that Blue or Green

There's a convenient space in the bottom right that is asking for an additional square to be drawn in, however...

Turquoise is what I've gone for. I think cyan is strictly a description of the mix of blue and green light, whereas a mix of blue and green pigments creates turquoise. Amusingly, googling just "cyan" brought up this result:


Tim, I've changed the colour - it still needs to be notified to the DVLA and correct on the V5C. If I take the wrap off (which is pretty unlikely) I'll change it back to grey.

That’s interesting Jobbo, I’d have thought a wrap would be classed as a temporary change.. I hope the ladies from cannon ball run remembered to change their car color on the pink slip!

DVLA requirements are to notify them of a colour change even if it's a wrap - have been for a decade or so. It's not that temporary anyway when it took a week to apply it
