Hold up. I was looking at Maltings as it's where I got the first incorrect one from*. It's not listed on their website but their ebay shop has a much lower priced LR181136 from a different aftermarket brand.

M2 has had it's running in service over the Xmas period at a cost of £440 which I wept at as on the ramp for only an hour

Diff and engine oil must be a big earner for the main dealers which you have to have to maintain the warranty!

It feels considerably more lively than the F87 which I wasn't expecting as the internet says it's so big and heavy and ooh new cars are rubbish! It's still a small car at only 3cm longer the the E92 M3 but it is 8cm wider all in the wings You can fit 4 adults ok so wouldn't want it any bigger.

I've done a couple of hundred miles this week so the kids are looking forward to exploring launch control the weekend.

My daughter has bought a Supra as well which we will collect Friday so hopefully a drag race the weekend

2023 2.0 in Moeraki Grey.

It looks like a flat colour like Audi Nardo Grey but it is a metallic and can appear purply in certain lights. I'm looking forward to it myself

LR181136 ordered 13:30 yesterday received 10:00 today. Can't complain about that !

Fitted during my elevenses-early-lunch break.

It fits and the engine runs. I'll have to drive it a bit and see how it goes.

The new unit looks exactly like the old one. Differences though:

* The old butterfly slightly "latches" in the fully open position as if there's a detent in the mechanism. The new one doesn't.
* The old butterfly in the fully open position is completely parallel to the airflow. The new stops maybe 10° short.
* The old butterfly will stick in the fully closed position if you close it firmly. The new one springs straight back.

So it looks like the old one was probably not behaving properly. At over 15 years old and unknown mileage (because it's not the car's original one, and certainly wasn't replaced along with the engine in 2016) I'll just have to accept it's a consumable at this stage.

Anyone here got SGS branded stuff and happy with it? I think I’ve seen it mentioned before on here. I need a new air compressor and SGS are better priced than Machine Mart but all their recent reviews seem to be poor and forums saying to stay away etc?

I had an SGS brush cutter, two-stroke, which I used once and found horrible so threw it away after a few years of sitting around.

My SGS jack is lovely, though. I supplemented it with one of the Halfords low-entry 3t jacks SJ found when it was on a deal and assumed they’d be very similar, but I think the SGS feels higher quality.

Looking at it closely it looks almost identical to the Machine Mart one but has a 2 year warranty instead of 12 months and I prefer black over blue so I think I'll give it a go.

I've driven the Disco twice now on local roads that always used to trigger it, and nothing happened. But I'm not going to trust it yet.

A very peculiar thing though, there was previously a problem with the GPS reception where it would only occasionally get a signal. Since changing the throttle body it's been 100% fine. They can't possibly be connected. So I'm going with an idea that the canbus system on these is super flaky and components haven't been designed to fail politely or reject interference and the throttle body was somehow dumping noise into the system that the nav system didn't like. Wild.

Speaking of the GPS antenna I have another rant about stupid design. It's inside the top of the tailgate underneath the high level brake light which is bonded in place and can't be removed without destroying it. So if you want to replace the antenna, you also have to buy a new brake light

The JLR electrical system is utter shit. They do luxury better than the Germans because they can find more things to wrap leather around but their software/battery side of things is crap. Fortunately it's put me off ever wanting to buy a F-Type or Range Rover. You can tell they just don't have the money to develop that side properly, which makes me wonder how the next generation all EV purely software driven cars will be. You don't want to buy a launch edition one of those that's for sure.

I’m sure a lot of modern cars with integrated systems are a bit shit if one part of it starts playing up.

My x5 would sometimes not display the indicator or high beam signals on the dash even though they worked outside the car, and the fuel gauge would stick at 1/3 of a tank.

What fixed it? Changing the satnav dvd drive. It was full of water from a mispositioned drip guide on the sunroof, presumably where it had got jammed and forced back into position rather than a properly synced reset.

Only one fault on a can system can do weird things.

OK. So not as unlikely as I thought.

I’ve also had a few occasions where it gives the full Christmas tree of warning lights and there’s 20+ error codes across the car all relating to communication errors. It’ll be nice if it doesn’t do that again.

I think I must have got a good one despite it only being shortly after the facelift came in - over three years in now and the screens have only ever gone blank on me once last summer. Typically that was on a run to the airport where having no carplay was sub-optimal but once it had done a full power down cycle it fixed itself. No other electrical maladies to report.

The 991 has got a new battery on it and my wallet is £550 lighter Interestingly the readout in the car suggests it is sitting at 0.5 volt lower during charging which suggest the other one was genuinely not happy. Maybe the car was trying to run at a higher voltage to overcompensate for the battery not taking charge. It may have been original and therefore 10 years old so not a bad run.

The service manager at Sidcup is also new and much better than the old one that fobbed me off when I pointed out the startup rattle. This guy took a video and is sending it to the warranty underwriters. It clearly is chain rattle from the tensioners being due for replacement. The problem is warranty companies often refuse to fix unless its genuinely broken - thing is I know each time I start it it will be taking chunks out the plastic chain guides which is clearly sub-optimal. Let's see where Porsche get to - hopefully they can apply some pressure. Engine out job so it will be $$$$$$.

Handbrake on the Zoe seems to have decided to do a Gallic shrug, and seize.

I had noticed that the lever didn't move as easily as before, but the car drove fine. Not so today. The wheel will rotate a bit before locking when reversing. Moving forwards it initially rolls freely, then stops again.

Wonder what they check at the main dealer when they service it, it was only a few weeks ago. *Sigh*.

Booking it in with my local indy.

Dragged the MINI out this morning, it's barely been used since getting the i3, and definitely hasn't been used the last few months through winter. Probably last used last time we had nice weather so September-ish ?

Started fine which was nice, drove fine for a quick blat up & down the main road but when I parked back on the drive I noticed steam coming from under the bonnet. I left the engine running & popped the bonnet open, a big cloud of steam and the coolant in the header tank merrily boiling away

It smacks of head gasket. These engines are slightly famous for it - I had that Clubman a few years back that I bought with a blown head gasket & fixed up. Sigh. I'll let it cool and then do a sniff test. Maybe tomorrow. It's pissing down with rain now because obviously it is.

If it’s a manual handbrake rather than electric then it’ll be the cables. Renault cables rust inside the sheaths and jam
