EOTR - Toyota GT86

Post by Carlos »

My daughters car which she bought July 2023. A late 2015 car with 58k miles in totally standard condition which seems a rare sight these days, 18 months and additional 20k miles without fault only routine servicing, discs and pads all round plus a clutch under warranty. Tyres were a sore point as it had 8 in total despite coming with 4 nearly new ones! Toyota's service is the best I've experienced and warranting the cars for 10 years is really standing by their product more so given the lives these types of cars can lead.

She loved it and it always drew a crowd at the youngsters car meets she goes to. I've driven it a couple of hundred miles but frankly I'm too big for it and although physically fit in it the steering wheel sat too low on my thighs. It was more than quick enough to be fun with 200bhp but the internet seems to knock it with hot hatches being 250 and up these days. It's clearly aimed at the car guy with everything from the engine noise, pedal feel, steering and gear change being robust and mechanical. Ride is firm but well controlled rather than crashy, it covers ground quickly and without fuss. I never worried about it being rwd and in the hands of my 18yr old daughter as it had so much mechanical grip and even with the stability stuff off you would have to do be doing something daft to get it moving in the dry.

Being standard and still under Toyota warranty really helped residuals and made it easy to sell privately. Costs were modest for a fun car, £2,200 in depreciation, £1,000 service and brakes, £1,000 tyres plus the clutch and few minor things under warranty when in for the service. She also managed to knock the passenger mirror off which was £200 fitted for an as new colour matched used one and spent £500 having the wheels refurbished and some scuffs tidied up to sell it. So depreciation and running costs came to about £273 per month.

Any reason it went through tyres so quick? Insurance can’t have been cheap!

3 where non repairable punctures but 5 where enthusiastic casualties, 2 pairs of rears and a passenger side front with a scrubbed sidewall trying to get the car sideways but unless your brutal the diff locks up pushing the car on and understeering lol

£3200 when she was 18 then the renewal was £1600 so pretty reasonable, I've mentioned this before but it appears much cheaper for young females to insure performance cars. I have an 18yr old son who is very much aggrieved at the situation

I thought they weren’t allowed to discriminate for sex any more? Maybe they load quotes based on names against a list of what’s usually male or female to get round it or something.

Maybe he should change his name to Jennifer 😄

I will get him try quoting as Miss instead of Mr lol

As it stands it would have been £6k to insure a GT86 at 18 with 1yr NCB so pretty much double with all being equal other than Miss/Mr!

Is there an optional “I’d rather not say” for gender? May be a work around..

Did you stick to the Prius tyres which came from the factory or use decent ones? I assume decent ones based on the description of the grip and the way it got through them.

It had Uniroyal Rainsports on it when we bought it and we stuck with them as they were changed so often not necessarily in pairs. Not a particularly note worthy tyre but I had no issues with them at around 20% less than PS4 or Conti Sport.

The main dealer referred to the factory tyres as Plastic Primacy's and chose not to fit them :D

Out of curiosity, how tall are you? I'm 6ft 4ins and on my 11th year of owning one and I fit fine unless I have a helmet on when doing a trackday.

I'm 6ft 1 and built like a bear. It's not a dig at the car I am aware I am a massive man, the point being that I would have driven it more just for giggles had I been more comfortable in it.
