g/fs lad is 17 on Sunday. He's already got a car ('15 Fiesta, very nice) that's registered to him. We just need to sort out learner insurance to start on Sunday, so he can have a go.

This seems to be proving problematic. You can't do anything online because stupid sites can't compute he's 17 on Sunday when the policy needs to start, and a broker she just called said can't start until Monday.

Huh? Shirely this is not a hard request?

Also i couldn't find any policies that don't load after passing. That seems to not be a thing anymore.

Look at Adrian flux for learner insurance. That was the cheapest option - you can buy 3 months. I did 2 months at £95

Yeah just did an AF quote online and they seem to understand how dates and birthdays work - his mum is on the phone now sorting it out.

The boy's renewal is in... now 2 years NCB and it's gone up £300 to £3000. Time to shop around and see if there's anything to be done to reduce that.

She's had the GT86 for 18 months now and been hankering for a change since the summer but was contracting at the time so I was reluctant to facilitate it. She's now permanent so theres not a lot I can do or say about her buying a Supra!

A friend of mine also mentioned LV wouldn't allow a policy with a learner to continue on same terms after he passed anymore without cancelling or repricing. It's a shame as it was a quick way to a years NCB as well as decent rates.

My eldest turns 17 in April and has decided she wants to drive so we will most likely be looking at cars and insurance for her.

My car is a DSG and my Wife has a Cooper S so not sure either are much use for even getting her on the insurance.

I have read this thread and the linked one and just wondered if anyone who has gone through this recently has any advice, or is it still a big old slog using all the comparison sites?

Car wise, I would rather get her into a Fabia sized car. she is think St Andrews for Uni in 2026 so would be nice to have something to get around Fife. C1s etc just look soooo tiny.

It’s been a good few years since we had to mess around with this.

When looking we did quotes for both provisional and full licence, and went with what worked out cheapest overall.

Took the quote on provisional while she was still learning and to start the no claims counter. Then when she passed phoned them up to convert it to a full license policy, knowing full well it was going to rise substantially.

Seemed to work ok, got a years no claims after only having her actual license for half a year or so.

My stepdaughter still hasn’t passed her test so I think we’re up to 3 years’ NCB on a cheap learner policy on her Mini.

She’s not even doing any lessons now so I think she has lost interest, but I’m not yet willing to get rid of the Mini just in case she does decide driving would be useful.

If she's likely to pass quickly I'd do what Harry suggests. Both my kids could drive before 17 and needed to drive for work/college so were highly motivated and did the same.

Some companies notably LV and NFU didn't load the policy or cancel when you pass which is the route I went down this year with my son but I've been told by a couple of my sons mates they wouldn't quote on those terms anymore.

If she's not bothered you could get a learner policy on the Mini as they tend to be cheap.

I considered that a year or so ago when I renewed and thought she’d bother taking her test. But the cost of the policy which wouldn’t cancel when she passes was vastly higher and on a cost/benefit analysis I thought I’d just keep accruing her NCB. Would be cheaper to leave it SORN’d and not insured but I can use it if I need to when it’s insured.

The cheapest way was for him to get learner insurance that covered him to drive the car. We had it insured through Mrs A. When he passed his test we transferred ownership to him and he took his own insurance. cheapest i could find was £2200 on a blackbox policy with Ticker. Their blackbox plugs into the ODB nd is self powered and data enabled. Doesnt need connected to a phone. The downside of this is that it only updates once a week so its difficult to pin down where hes being marked down.

The previously mentioned learner policies that dont load after a test pass dont seem to be a thing anymore. I tried all the companies mentioned in this thread - none would do it.

Hi, my 17yo is taking on his gran's C1. Seen a few mentions of learner/provisional insurance, looks like the way to go. Veygo are quoting £37 a month - about right or more shopping around to do?

I was getting 220 and up for group 1 & 2 cars with not much jump even to group 6. THat was for her owning the car and on a provisional.

The 1 litre Corsa is coming home this weekend to be handed over to my daughter.

We had fully comp cover on it for my son when he started learning at 17 when we were living outside Edinburgh. Cost was circa £2800.

Just got a quote for my daughter, fully comp up here with Admiral... £430.

I've had to double check it twice to make sure it's not a mistake and missing a zero or something.
