Ateca coolant problem has been traced to some pipework that needs replacing at the back of the engine, which requires the subframe dropping out to access it, looking at around 7 hours work.

Manufacturers warranties seem to make more and more sense to me these days!

The Porsche warranty has I think paid for itself three times over by now! Ironically the extended warranty on the RR has only paid out perhaps a third of its cost but overall i'm well up on premiums paid... which will now be wiped out by the Smart bills :(

What Steve said. 8-)

In other mik-fleet news - the Zanussi heat-pump tumble dryer lives on with a new float sensor (which senses the water levels from the condenser rising, and actuates the pump to pull it up into the collector tray on the top/front of the machine). £38.

(This collected condensent(condensate?) water is great for use in the iron and/or steam mop).

Yeah, I'm beginning to think I should only buy cars with decent warranties. The warranty on my 335i paid out roughly the value of the car over the period I owned it. The biggest bill was something like 40 hours labour at BMW Chiswick, plus a load of engine parts too, and car was only worth about £12k. However, that car was a complete lemon, the guy who bought it from me broke down on the way home. I also searched the registration a year or so after selling and someone was posting on a forum about a load of issues with the same car. Hopefully it's been scrapped now to prevent any more suffering

I take it a warranty is covering the Ateca, Gav? Or is the seller simply covering it?

In this case it's the dealer who supplied the car covering it, because it's within 30 days of purchase.

The way they (Marshall Motor Group) seem to work is that any issues within the first 30 days of ownership are repaired at the discretion of the dealer who supplied the car. Therefore, I've returned the car to Marshall Harlow (the closest dealer to me), who are doing the work and they will invoice Marshall Cambridge (supplied the car). After 30 days, any faults are covered by the Marshall warranty instead which is a different process. They seem to have this setup to allow more flexibility in dealing with issues directly after purchase.

How did the sale of the Smart go?

I put it on ebay, it sold for an average price and someone took it away, which is all I needed to happen, so it was a success

Except let's not forget that main dealers don't always go for the most efficient fix, they go for the full manufacturer replacement process.

My BILs Octavia VRS had a turbo failure. Issue was caused by a broken plastic clip (or something equally minor) but dealer said they had to replace the whole turbo. Total cost inc. labour was £4k. Specialist could have probably fixed that for a fraction of that.
It was warranties, so no issues, but still.

I'm under Alfa warranty, but there's no point. They can't even get hold of their own parts to fix anything anyway.

Probably requires a prescription of brave pills, but when the 550 turns 3 next sprint, I will probably skip on the warranty and use an indy for serving, there is a garage with a good reputation in worcs. Mainly because the standards at BMW are so poor, breaking the plastic parts of the engine, overfilling coolant etc.

Access and the sheer amount of joints in a modern engine bay is hilarious.
Every joint is a failure point and as access is so bad then every time you go in there parts are disturbed. Look at how much stuff goes over the top of a modern engines rocker cover, all pointless.

I’m thinking when the ML dies I’ll buy the nicest G Wagon I can afford with the old diesel in and fit a Diesel Pump U.K. OM606 mechanical diesel to it.

Or, can you get CarPlay in a Unimog 🤔

The 928 now has remote central locking! I've not wired up the indicators yet to give visual confirmation but it works a treat especially considering it was a uber cheap £12 Chinese unit. Simple 4 wire installation (Permanent +12V, ground, lock and unlock). I'm going to tidy up the installation and maybe fabricate a mounting bracket for the module rather than have it floating around in the centre console. Think I'll put a connector on the end of the wires I soldered into the central locking controller plug, so if the cheap unit gives up the ghost I can easily swap it out with minimum faff.

Electric seat is still a work in progress but I've ripped out the shit switch, repaired the loom, replaced the faulty OEM switch and got the Deutsch connector on the seat harness, just need to wire up the car side and then test.
If you get all wobbly-lipped about the opinion of Internet strangers, maybe it's time to take a bath with the toaster as you'll never amount to sh1t anyway.

It's because too many dealers were pushing cars out of the door with known issues in the hope that the warranty company picked up the bill when it let the customer down. 14 or 30 days is the norm now, as any problem straight after purchase should generally be picked up in the pre-sale prep.

The Model 3 has had an impressive update to its self parking abilities (which never properly worked).
You enter a carpark now and it zooms out and does a 3D render of everything it can see, which goes an impressive distance and it highlights every empty spot it can park in. You select a spot and it does the rest - at a pretty decent speed.
I thought they had given up on it as this is running pretty ancient Intel hardware so nice to see it’s still being developed.
How about not having a sig at all?

RS EV on YouTube did a video on this a week or so ago - I was mostly impressed though it did drive gently into a fence post at one point and at another point went all Austin Powers trying to get into a space in a lane 😄

Just had a glance and he has the new version without parking sensors which explains it.
Also got the ASS update but as far as I can tell it’s useless in the UK due to our regulations as it says you have to stand right next to the car.
