It's like me being gunned down in the street, and mrs mik - consumed with grief - offering a £50 reward for information leading to the identification of my killer.

Re: Brian Thompson
My point was purely that the numbers seem off for someone of such enormous wealth.

What's your life worth buddy? I'm trying to balance the reward with the prison time...mik wrote: Fri Dec 06, 2024 5:35 pm My point was purely that the numbers seem off for someone of such enormous wealth.

I don't see what's controversial about not giving a shit about someone dying, given the industry they presided over and the imapcts they've had. It's a bit like being upset at Bin Laden being taken out.dinny_g wrote: Fri Dec 06, 2024 5:23 pm The attitudes displayed are a sad indictment of modern life.

So the CEO has gone on record in an address to say “we guard against unnecessary care"
He’d be better off keeping his mouth shut right now.

I wonder who has the higher body count as a result of their actions - if we're assigning deaths to the leaders of those groups - Bin Laden, or Brian Thompson?
Edit: For clarity re SJs post above, unnecessary care is when the insurance company thinks that when a surgeon says "this person needs painkillers for a week after their surgery" that they are being overly cautious or generous, so the insurance company says "No, they're getting two days worth".
It's not providing strippers and booze in the ward. It's them overriding the position of the medical professional who is caring for the patient.

Re: Brian Thompson
The phrase "unnecessary care" sounds damn austere in itself, as if care is something that should be strictly rationed.

Re: Brian Thompson
There was some other stuff on X, one poster claiming Mangione had undergone back surgery at some point, which if true, could be enormously relevant.
Re: Brian Thompson
Fascinating profile. Certainly doesn't sound like his family had problems with affording health care.

Aye, something about his twitter header being an x-ray of some pretty serious spinal repair. Lots of plates and screws.

I would assume that even if you're wealthy, you still pay for insurance and will have to battle with them. I.e. you're not just gonna pay out $50k for an ambulance to pick you up, if an insurance company can pay 90% of it for you.duncs500 wrote: Tue Dec 10, 2024 8:27 am Fascinating profile. I wonder if he's someone who became enormously disillusioned with American Freedom™ and so decided to explore a more philosophical approach to absolute freedom. Which will of course bring him into contact with justice, which is the tool we use to prevent freedom from descending into anarchy.

Pretty good example for someone doing a study on the difference between legal, moral and ethical imo.

Re: Brian Thompson
Apparently this is Mangione's manifesto, the major news outlets have not published it and I've not seen any proof this is genuine either, so who knows:
“To the Feds, I'll keep this short, because I do respect what you do for our country. To save you a lengthy investigation, I state plainly that I wasn't working with anyone. This was fairly trivial: some elementary social engineering, basic CAD, a lot of patience. The spiral notebook, if present, has some straggling notes and To Do lists that illuminate the gist of it. My tech is pretty locked down because I work in engineering so probably not much info there. I do apologize for any strife of traumas but it had to be done. Frankly, these parasites simply had it coming. A reminder: the US has the #1 most expensive healthcare system in the world, yet we rank roughly #42 in life expectancy. United is the [indecipherable] largest company in the US by market cap, behind only Apple, Google, Walmart. It has grown and grown, but as our life expectancy? No the reality is, these [indecipherable] have simply gotten too powerful, and they continue to abuse our country for immense profit because the American public has allwed them to get away with it. Obviously the problem is more complex, but I do not have space, and frankly I do not pretend to be the most qualified person to lay out the full argument. But many have illuminated the corruption and greed (e.g.: Rosenthal, Moore), decades ago and the problems simply remain. It is not an issue of awareness at this point, but clearly power games at play. Evidently I am the first to face it with such brutal honesty.”

She’s been a pretty influential advocate for prison reform for a while tbh.
She actually does a lot of good work for various causes.

Not sure what she can do with a self confessed murder though...

Probably nothing, the article is about fans asking her to do something, not her doing something.
