CEO of US United Healthcare - murdered the other night.

RIP (?)

(Reportedly the cases of the bullets used had "Deny Depose Defend" carved into them. United Healthcare apparently are at the head of the league table in the US for denying (nearly a third of) claims source ).

Firstly - it wasn't me.

Secondly - I have no idea of his total net worth, but he apparently had a salary of $9million PA, and held a total of $65million in shares and stock options in United alone.

BBC news reported last night that the family have offered a reward for information.... of $10k. :?

I'm not an expert on these matters, but doesn't this seem like a supiciously small amount? :geek:

There's a massive lack of sympathy around the death, which is understandable given how US healthcare leaves people on the streets to rot. Plus the suspected assassin was low-key handsome.

Aye, bluesky is split between the libs being all “a man died, have some respect” and everyone else going “I wouldn’t have respected him if he was alive”.

If I were paid $10m a year in a job that was controversial such as his I'd damn sure have bodyguards for walking around the streets of a large dangerous city (particularly where guns are legal...).

It's the thing that surprised me most about the US, how people with severe health problems or disabilities are simply rolling around the streets. Seeing people who are physically and/or mentally incapacitated simply begging on the streets or screaming at passersby was a shock.

People like that are fairly anonymous and I suppose have never felt the need for protection. Clearly the assailant has had themselves or a family member declined treatment but this is becoming increasingly common - one provider has recently said they will only fund anaesthesia up to a limited time for certain surgeries  and US physicians are generally grumbling about it being harder and harder to treat patients by getting funding cleared.

I'm with the latter. His job was literally letting people suffer & die in order to make himself more money that he didn't need.

He was also being investigated for insider trading, and there was something about a messy divorce too. Maybe someone else wanted him out of the way and the "it was a disgruntled customer" angle is an easy distraction.

Aye, personally I think that it’s obviously not good for people to be getting gunned down in the street. But if it has to happen to someone, let it happen to a dude who literally made a fortune off of misery.

Yeah, I regularly chatter with working/middle class americans online in a few discords, and there's basically zero sympathy for this guy because they all have horror stories of insurance companies being shitheads to their families in some manner.

"I’ve never wished a man dead, but I have read some obituaries with great pleasure." seems to be the vibe from my circles.

I have to say, there's some eye opening views being posted in this thread. Is it open season on employees of industries we don't like ?

Killing this guy isn't going to change the Insurance Industry in the US one iota. It's not going to achieve anything or affect any change. It's just murderous revenge. Just punishing the family of one guy for the work that he does, as unpleasant as that work may seem.

Who's next ? Tobacco Executives, Pharma Executives, Family Planning Clinic directors ?

A company reversed a decision to stop paying for anaesthesia after the halfway point of surgery almost instantly.

Even if that’s the only thing that happens it’s a net gain.

If we tolerate this, then your children will be next...

I'm sure there are people out there who feel as strongly about the head of Greenpeace (Caused the Chemical factory to close - 100's of jobs lost, brother killed himself)...

Be careful what you think is a justifiable murder because I can guarantee, it won't always be aligned to your way of thinking...

I see your point, but there's a thin line (very thin) between a justifiable act and not crying over the outcome. In some respects, you could argue this simply boils down to "fuck around, get found out", but on a vast corporate scale.

I don’t know if you’ve noticed but hundreds of kids a year are shot in the US and no one gives a fuck.

Apart from guys like Brian Thompson who get rich off of their medical care.

Corporate Darwin Awards, really. I think it's over 300,000 people go bankrupt per year due to medical costs not being covered in the US, so basically throughout your life as an American, unless you're part of the very wealthy, you almost certainly know someone who was personally ruined by these organisations.

Anyway...
