Not had chance to read the thread, but as a previous hiring manager one of the biggest things I want to know is why your a good fit for my team and org, not the boiler plate box ticks of the job spec, but culture, attitude to learning, attitude to change, attitude to challenges, attitude toteam working etc. Teaching skills to someone enthusiastic and a team player is easy compared to working with a highly skilled twat.

Presentation itself actually went quite well, especially considering I'd not done one before. The conversation after was also good, until the end, where it felt slightly less cordial and I think I could sense some apprehension.

They asked about my notice period, which I answered, but I also mentioned something else happening at the business, which I think made them question my actual motivation for seeking a new role, which has always remained consistent and not influenced by anything happening at the business.

There is certainly the possibility that I am looking into things too much, but I was just being honest.

Nothing I can do about it now. Will have to wait and see!

I sometimes think employers don’t really want to hire people. They make the process so pointlessly arduous.

I once had a second interview with the MD of a company, all he did was fire “when was the last time *imaginary scenario* happened?” questions at me. None of them really applied and i didn’t have any examples of any. They were getting so dumb that i just made up an answer to one to hopefully get him to stop. He then decided that my answer wasn’t the right approach to that issue and started over analysing my made up response.

I stopped him and told him that if he was more interested in what i hadn’t done that asking what i can do that it’s probably best we finish up because i didn't think his attitude portrayed where i wanted to work. He looked a little shocked, i got up and left.

Spent all of yesterday interviewing and will do all of tomorrow.

My reflection was no one seems to know when to stop answering a question.

Also one of them kept bouncing up and down which was annoying and I zoned out thinking about someone else I know who bounces up and down and also is annoying.

I’ve never interviewed anyone, I don’t think I’d be very good at it.

I’ve only really had one bad one and that was after I graduated. Small software company in Northampton. I was interviewed by the owner who I think just wanted to tell me how great and successful he was. He started actually having a go at me because I’d done A level French saying “Why did you do that, nobody codes in French”. I wish I’d have had the quickness of mind to say “I fucking can, cunt”.

He introduced to me to his star employee and right hand man who’d been there for twenty years and had risen through the ranks then pointed to the carpark and said “And look at what he drives now”. It was an MX5. Nice enough car but the way he was going on I was expecting a gold-plated GT3.

But yeah, £18k. I was desperate to start working so tried to make myself look attractive. I got over that way of thinking after a few years.

In April 2002 my basic was £10k, with a £44k O.T.E. I think my first job out of Uni in Sept '01 was £14k with a £28k O.T.E - I left a month after the guaranteed commission ran out as there was no hope of getting near the O.T.E.

Interviewing is a boring, arduous task - I'm not surprised at their lack of enthusiasm, especially if they've been doing this repeatedly for 8 months. I get bored after about 2 people, especially as I interview for IT which are generally applied for by people who are just weird or lacking any social ability whatsoever.

However, on the intervewee side....you need to go with your gut. Have you had a chance to walk around, see the offices and who you'll be working with?
