Jaguar's list of binned cars

Post by Jobbo »

Listening to Smith & Sniff on the way to work, they made me start thinking about Jaguar being a bit rubbish. Some - quite a lot in fact - of their cars have been really good. But they have a habit of binning mostly developed cars which must be an utter waste of resources:

XJ13
XJ41 F-Type (admittedly, this did become the DB7)
CX-75
The electric XJ replacement

Maybe there are more; those are just off the top of my head. When you look at BMW's nearly production-ready models which didn't get made, they're things like an E46 M3 Touring - stuff which is just a variation of the things they did make. How much cash has Jag wasted over the years?

i expect BMW are the same - what was the E22, E29, F04, etc? presumably abandoned projects?

There are a shitload of unused BMW code numbers - I have always wondered about that. They may of course not have got off the drawing board. It's the way Jag actually had running prototypes being developed for years that looks wasteful.

They didn’t have much else to be shouting about though. Stuff like the CX75 was probably always a halo concept car.

Ive "Almost" bought a Jag twice. Both times ended back in a BMW due to the jag dealer being shit.

XE-S 3.0 V6. Really really nice car. I drove one on a jaguar experience day. really liked it. But the dealers car was overpriced and they were undervaluing my Golf R. BMW offered me a much better deal against my M240i. Im talking a couple of grand better on the trade value.

F-Pace 3.0 S - once again shit trade in but the car was also a bit rough. It had the pre-facelift infotainment which was fucking awful. Laggy and slow. I couldnt have lived with that.

I know someone who had a deposit down on the XJ Electric that was cancelled.

CX-75 looked ready but really wasn't underneath.

No idea how much time and money would have been needed for it to hit it's weight and performance targets so as to not be humiliated by the "Trinity" but I'm going to guess it would have been years and quiet a lot.

XK180 was nice. IIRC that was fully working and sounded great.
