I don't know much about the diesel DPF thing, only that it's an issue. Do you know if it's time or engine revs the engine needs? E.g. driving to my gf takes 45-60 mins so the car runs for a while, but it's only 8 miles so the car barely exceeds 20mph and spends a lot of time idling. Do you know if that's gonna hammer it?DeskJockey wrote: Sat Nov 16, 2024 1:39 pm Makes sense then. My worry, and one of the reasons we sold the diesel Mazda, was the impact of short drives where it never really got to warm up. If it isn't a daily driver, then you're probably fine.

Sounds like you need some sort of car hire company that you can hire someone else’s car for the odd journey….!Gavster wrote: Sat Nov 16, 2024 1:36 pmULEZ is fine with these. Also mileage is a 'who knows' guess - I can't do long journeys in the Smart, so therefore I get the train if I need to travel out of London. I don't use a car every day, in fact, it can sit outside without moving for a week or two at a time. My spec is in the first post, however the main aim is getting good fuel economy if I decide to pop up to Scotland or down to my folks (only 100 miles, but commonly a 2.5 - 3 hour drive)DeskJockey wrote: Sat Nov 16, 2024 1:02 pm Is a diesel the right choice? What kind of mileage will you be doing and what about ULEZ?
Was chatting with Sundayjumper earlier and worked out that I'm more concerned about weekly/monthly costs (fuel, parking, tax, repairs) than initial purchase price.

As far as I understand it, it needs to get up to proper temperature to burn off the particles, bumbling around London at 20mph probably isn't enough.Gavster wrote: Sat Nov 16, 2024 1:45 pmI don't know much about the diesel DPF thing, only that it's an issue. It'll dump fuel into the exhaust to burn, but that then messes with the fuel economy and I'm guessing reduces the lifespan.
Our Mazda was markedly peppier after a decent motorway drive compared to the daily 2-3 mile slogs of dropping off and picking up children.

Carbon build up needs to be deposited when cold, when the engine warms up it gets hotter and can burn it away.Gavster wrote: Sat Nov 16, 2024 1:45 pmI don't know much about the diesel DPF thing, only that it's an issue. When it cools it hardens and is much harder to remove.
So the only real way to stop it happening is to use good fuel, have good fuel filtration, do full heat cycles every trip and own it from new.
Some engines are better than others but I’ve yet to learn about any modern diesel that isn’t comprised.
Also when people say go for a hard drive, it’s rarely hard and it’s rarely under load and hot.
Dave!

A decent motorway run will do it. Bimbling around London will not.

Okay then it might make sense to get a petrol version. Annoyingly the 1.4 petrol Supervs seem to be mostly £13-14k

I'm not even joking - it's very, very deliberate.

Aren't the forum defaults Tit X & Yeti? I wonder if a Vignale would be in budget? How about a similarly undergubbinsed Volvo?
The Skoda L&K above is pleasant (even without a glass roof), don't forget DSG and Haldex servicing costs.

Re: £10k buy vs ~£300 pcm lease
Don't rule out the Superb hatch or Ocxtavia hatch.
The Superb is looooong though, fille most spaces to the brim so if you are in a city, that might be an issue?
My hatch can fit a bike, a large fridge, two single beds, doors. The roofline on the estate is fairly sloped so the loss to hatch is not as big as you might think.
The main plus point for the Superb is leg room in the back. Other than that, the Octavia is very similar dash etc.
The L&K has the 4x4 and teh 280 engine. They are fast, but the Superb forumites seem to get mid to high 30s at best on a run.
Plus, in a city people will try and get in thinking you are a taxi.
The L&K will also have DCC most likely which are about £500 a corner iirc. at 120k chances are they will need done soon, if they have not been done.
The glass roof looks great, are prones to cracking on the trim and the odd leak.
Mine is the 220 2.0 TSi. I get mid 40s on a "keeping up with traffic" run and if I am bimbling at just under 60 will creep in to the low 50s, which is astonishing for a barge with a Golf GTi engine.
I was looking for the Octavia estate but I wanted Canton, heated seats and DSG and becuase the Golf got pinched, I was in a bit of a rush and I admire all the car can do, but do not enjoy driving it, it is not sporty, I find it worse than my diesel mk2 Suuperb SE to drive and it is allegedly a "sportline" but it does not enjoy hussling.

Is yours DSG or manuel? The DSG seems to sap fuel consumption in some cases plus I’ve heard the manuel is more trouble-free.
And you’re the second person (at least) to mention parking. I kinda shrugged it off, but at the same time, this was me gloating last night
