New “car” thread - Phase 1

Post by Rich B »

Phase 1 of my (slight midlife crisis) car buying is now done and i have the practical element sorted (ish). The brief was something to do the daily driving (mostly sat in traffic these days) as well as the more important mountain biking duties.

So, i picked up my van yesterday, and much to SJ‘s fortune telling prediction it is indeed a black transporter - quite a posh one in the end!

It’s a 2021 T6.1 T30 (150bhp) - and so far, i think it’s great (though i have a few plans!). It has all the kit i could want in a daily - leather, heated screen, carplay, LED lights, etc

I’ve already taken the roof bars off and the next plans are to swap the wheels and suspension for something a little more me (and a little more multi storey car park height friendly), then decide if i want to keep the bulkhead in place.

But most importantly, i can put my bike in whole at the moment (and 3/4 without the front wheels) so i can get on to my bike park driver duties!

Phase 2 - Lotus purchase - ongoing!

Nice van!

One of my customers runs Bike Stow - some of those would work a treat in the back of there.

I am 99% sure I’ve seen a 2 piece bulkhead at a dog show, it was a company selling built in dog crates and the bulkhead tip was on a hinge.

So many parts for these off the shelf which is a big bonus.

yeah, something like the axle mount solution would be what i’d look for - his ones seem pretty high spec/clever - hopefully i can just do similar with some cheaper ones!

id just ditch the bulkhead tbh - i don’t really need anything clever.

i might get/make a folding bed frame too before next summer and take my boy on some over night biking adventures.

What's the NVH implication of taking the bulkhead out?

Quilted leather? Posh.

You don't have a black friend who refuses to fly, by any chance?

Don't know much about them, but looks like it fits the brief.

What suspension is more you?

i pity the fool…!

The bulkhead is just a bolt in plastic one, not a full on metal job. the whole van has been acoustic matted and trimmed - it’s super quiet anyway.

The wheels/ride height are not my style. i’d be after a less fussy design, with lower profile tyres and on slightly lower suspension

Fancy!
Are those Brabus wheels? Can't tell by zooming in. (edit: though Brabus would be more Merc/Smart than VW?)

It’s the VW scene, they would cut the entire floor out to fit some obscure alloys.

Rich spotted next week, on his alloys that emulate steelies.

The main downside with removing the bulkhead is that it takes the interior much longer to heat up in the winter. I fitted a curtain in my old t5 in place of the bulkhead.

The Adventure look is the thing in Campers at the moment so should see strong money back for those.

You going original banded steelies or 22" alloys ? lol

I don’t know much about van specs so would it have come new from VW with side windows and 5 seats but no bulkhead?

Looks very good and will doubtless spur SJ on to buy a Vito/V-class at long last.
