As Jobbo said it’s not the place and we’re just shouting at each other from entrenched positions.

it’s definitely harder to argue when someone completely debunks your figures.ZedLeg wrote: Wed Aug 07, 2024 3:14 pm I just lost interest in the conversation.

Re: Southport
There are plenty of crimes which attract potentially long prison sentences which aren't violent. Look at Nick Leason. Some things have long sentences specifically to dissuade people from doing them.ZedLeg wrote: Wed Aug 07, 2024 12:59 pm I’ve still not seen an adequate explanation of how a road block is violence tbh.
Beyond a right wing government and press suggesting it is obvz.
This thread is about the riots, not about sentencing across a wide range of diverse crimes. I don't think anyone would deny there are inconsistencies in sentencing. But it's a separate discussion.
Re: Southport
It's a good time to go for a naughty drive now. Roads pretty deserted almost as if it's past midnight and Police all too busy. Utter bliss.
How about not having a sig at all?
Re: Southport
What’s with the fixation on violence? It’s as much about the effect as it is the act itself.ZedLeg wrote: Wed Aug 07, 2024 12:59 pm I’ve still not seen an adequate explanation of how a road block is violence tbh.
Stop bleating about JSO being an ‘inconvenience’ and ‘annoying’. Easy to say when you’ve not been affected in the slightest by any of it. Have a day off.
Re: Southport
Yup, grew up in a xenophobic little shithole about four hours drive from the city and probably to the horror of my progressive politics parents and immigrant dad (hence the Euro passport and later a decade working in the UK*) I became a xenophobic little arsehole for a good many years, I probably didn't learn to stop punching down until I hit rock bottom myself. So looking back at the environment of one little xenophobic shithole it's going to take decades (centuries) to drag that place into the 20th century. Maybe "Welcome to country" makes no difference, but it's important that you at least try.KiwiDave wrote: Wed Aug 07, 2024 7:46 am And this - great to see it acknowledged by someone who actually lives there. (Are you actually Australian Rob?)
*Yes I took ur jawbs, nobody ever commented.

People who think they're the "silent majority" when reality kicks in.
Re: Southport
There was a hell of a swing to the good last night, looking at the news reports.
I thought the pissed up older white lady, walking home from the pub, looking for any Asian lad she could find to give them a hug was lovely. Hilarious... and I expect a lot had their arses felt... but lovely all the same.
I also heard a lovely clip on the radio of a proper dyed in the wool east end Geezer talking about how much he loved the multiculturalism of his area saying things like "I've learned how to say Hello in loads of different languages" and how he goes to the park every Saturday because "Hasan and his family are always cooking Lamb Flatbreads on a BBQ and he always keeps one for me"

Re: Southport
You'd think there'd be some self reflection now that it's been made clear that they're a minority (by choice, notably) and how that feels, but it seems unlikely.

Re: Southport
If they had the capacity to self-reflect and contextualise their actions they wouldn't be rioting in the first place. They're simply not a position in life to be able to do that.
Re: Southport
Well, anyway - at what point are Farage, the Daily Heil, and arguably the BBC (for promoting Farage so hard) gonna get their fucking ticket punched for uncritically pushing this bullshit for the last twenty years?
Re: Southport
GB News also practically telling people where to go riot and what times...
How about not having a sig at all?
Re: Southport
LOL, the Express, basically the paper of Reform Ltd - you know, the Daily Mail but with an even lower reading age, more angry audience, has done a poll.
So that's going well
So that's going well

Re: Southport
One of the more verbose ways of telling someone to "fuck off and give your head a wobble you stupid arrogant cunt" that I've seen lately.
