It'll be a black scene-spec T6. We don't need a what car thread for that one :D

Rich B wrote: Thu Oct 03, 2024 9:34 pm  i’ve learnt some great stuff on this thread - though it’s not made my choices any easier!

i also need to sell my M2 and buy a van (with equally obsessive criteria) along the way, but i’m maybe flexible on which order i do it!
What’s the van spec? Is it a ‘family van’?

I’m kinda interested in white goods vehicles these days for some reason
Family-ish. We’ll still have the 3series estate for actual family stuff.

like SJ says - ideally i want a T6 transporter combi (lowered on 20s and enough bhp to not hate) for daily driving and mountain biking. i want min 4 seats, room for bikes and possibly the ability to sleep in it one day too. I don’t want a full camper, but maybe a rock and roll seat/bed set up.

basically it’s just a load of hassle to load bikes (1 bike is ok, 2 is massive ballache) in the M2 for both spontaneous mtb outings like evening rides and the big planned mtb trips. i want to do more of both and start taking my boy out on his bike more too.

The traffic on my daily drive has kind of sapped the fun out of commuting in the M2, so i want to split the duties. Van for sensible stuff, then an Elise for being silly (and even for making the boring commute feel a little sillier now and then).

This won’t help your choice as there is generally only 1 reason people want a VW van, but the Transit is better, even with the wet belt shenanigans.

I realise you’ve already said “oh fuck off”
😂

Similarly - I’d take a Vito/Viano over the VW all day. I’ve had a T4 & a W639. The Merc was way better.

The mountain bike need isn’t going away though! A chunk of the attraction of Ms was the fact you could stick a bike in them - because they’re basically just regular saloon cars underneath - but now i want MORE! 😂

He could just skip to the correct choice and buy the 911 straight up ;)

Plus a FFRR then he wouldn't need the 3 series or the van :D

Cough

ETA: Though I would never actually consider putting a bike on the roof of a 911. I can only imagine the potential paint damage.

um yeah, you’re not really getting the van bit!

Tbh, another part of this is the idea that i can swap the 2nd car if i want to try something different in the future (like a 911).

Thats what i do currently

But it’s a ballache, takes time to put on/take off, you have to drive slower and you can’t leave the bikes on top when you leave the car. (especially as the bikes i usually have on/in the car add up to about £12k.)

I was assuming you’d be keeping the van.

Or, sticking to his original 2-car plan for practical + mid engined fun, how about a Discovery & a Ferrari ? 8-)

If it was a silver car it would be more palatable. The black GTS is a bastard for showing even the tiniest mark and something on the roof would hit you in the face every time you looked at it given it is below eye level.

Again, i’m all in for the Ferrari, but you can’t fit 4 people and 4 bikes inside a discovery.
