Sounds like a logical improvement, but not sure how often it was really a problem? You'd have to have mislaid both the reminder/demand letter they send, and also your V5C before you'd found yourself in difficulty.

Sounds like they want to put this guy out of business: https://www.roadtaxmartin.com/

Gathering together “bits of paper” is a bit “1900s” though. i’m surprised it took them this long.

Re: Now easier to tax your car
We got one of those final demand type letters printed in a red font so you know they mean business because we hadn't taxed the Polaris ATV. Which is of course tax exempt but you still have to tax it for £0 or they'll fine you. For something. Maybe for £0.
Cheers,

You need to set up a DD for £0 per month, and never think about it again.Ascender wrote: Thu Oct 03, 2024 2:29 pm We got one of those final demand type letters printed in a red font so you know they mean business because we hadn't taxed the Polaris ATV. Yes, do this - I SORNed my stepdaughter's Mini because it's not doing anything and had forgotten I'd paid in full for the year's road tax. So she got the refund. If I'd paid by direct debit it would have simply stopped.tim wrote: Thu Oct 03, 2024 1:29 pm Shirley everyone just pays by direct debit and never thinks about it again?
Re: Now easier to tax your car
As sensible and obvious a step this has been, you just know that this has cost millions though
First a consultancy firm had to assemble a think tank to decide if they needed to do this
Then surveys of people will have been done to see if the people wanted this
Then the department heads had to have many many meetings about when and how to do it
Then IT were given the task of merging the databases and coming up with a website design
Then the department heads who look at their computers on a semi regular basis and say the words “where the fuck is my mouse” told the IT guys that they’d done it wrong and had to put in at least another 5000 lines of pointless code that sends every other user into a loop of death they can’t escape from
Then they had to put it back to the original way when someone realised they knew what they were doing
Then they had to assemble another think tank to decide when to launch this
Then someone got a massive bonus for it getting rolled out, and it wasn’t the guys who coded the new site
