caught out for following the rules about declaring gifts?

whereas Boris is now stating the only thing he did wrong when he was PM was apologising…

says it all.

So he gets told by the shitrag press that the shitrag-press reading members of the public think that some of the hospitality he declared and were deemed to be within the rules are a bit frivolous, so he's arranged for the commissioning of new rules around what's acceptable and has refunded the value of things he thinks wouldn't be considered kosher within the new rules, setting an example for going forward.

That's not a gotcha, that's called integrity. I'm not shocked some people - like the shitrag press - don't recognise it, mind, it's not something they're remotely familiar with.

That's politics - take thousands in free hospitality and look hypocritical when a key part of your ticket was to make politics squeaky clean.

They're also systematically under-declaring the value of these freebies. It may be that that is a common practice across the board but again, doesn't smack of probity.

Integrity is how you behave when no one is watching.

If he’d had any integrity, he would have changed the rules when he received the hospitality, not when called out for it.

Changing the rules after the fact when you’ve been called out isn’t integrity. It’s political expediency to try undo the damage

Well yes, he’s physically changing the rules to stop any misinterpretation around what is an appropriate gift and what is not. Or, in your words - “mak(ing) politics squeaky clean”.

what more should/could he do?

Would he have changed the rules if not called out by the “shitrag press” - no

Therefore Integrity isn’t the correct word for what he’s done

Whilst i probably agree that he probably should have considered the optics of accepting (and fully legally declaring them) £20k of gifts a year - hindsight is a wonderful thing.

Again, you only have to put it into the perspective of what his peers were doing at the same time. Kiers gifts cost the tax payer nothing, whilst Boris was claiming £250k of tax payers money to defend his breaking the rules he’d made!

it’s chalk and cheese in terms of integrity!

Don’t get me wrong - I say fair play to him for what he’s done. And I’ve been defending him in this thread about the Arsenal tickets etc.

But integrity isn’t the correct word. He’s just a politician reacting in the way all politicians do

Lets say 'a degree of integrity' then, which is actually what I intended to write, and then rewrote the sentence and forgot it

Do politicians not have their own houses and offices?

I never would have thought that moving into wealthy donors houses would be so common tbh.

nah, that’s fine - the Tories have never wanted to clean up Politics - they’re the party for dirty politics and everyone is ok with that.

Are you implying he’s neutral then? just digging dirt on anyone who’s dirty?

on an unrelated note, i wonder which of the other Tory leadership candidates he’s backing?
