Forgot to mention the e220d we had on holiday in Tuscany. Quite appropriate really as it was quite forgettable

Reasonably nice thing with a pretty gutless engine - it has quite snappy takeoff but not much above that. It did seem to do incredible MPG though. Ride was also pretty bad. It was very soft but little in the way of control - really shows that for comfort and control you need an air suspension or adaptable system. As per usual it hasn't a fucking clue what the prevailing speed limit was at any point in time - though that seemed fair enough as it was barely ever clearly signposted in the countryside either - predominantly you had to know that if you were in a built up area it was probably 50kph

Ironic we had the C class estate in Portugal where parking was not an issue and an E in Italy where I had to jam it in a far too small public parking space and hold my breath that it didn't have half the side scratched to pieces when I got back.

I also was meaning to ask - on one of the toll routes it wouldn't take the ticked on the way out. Pressing the assistance button didn't get us a person but just gave us a minimum toll to pay. I paid that so did not get a "toll not paid" receipt which you seem to need to pay it online. I emailed the motorway toll company but no response so I'm expecting I'll get a bill for a £12 toll and £288 fine in about 12 months time

ETA - it was hot!

Yes whilst I was sat there basking in the luxurious cloth seats I wasn't regretting spending my £60(ish)k on a 3 year old 4.4 litre Range Rover instead.

That looks ace.

Just back from Spain where I had a fiat 500 70hp hybrid thing.
Now, the cost - 48 quid plus 28 taxes for wait for it 12 days.

It wasnt that bad actually on flat roads, sipped fuel.

I was expecting to be robbed by the hire car company for something as it was so cheap but no, no unexpected bills.

I'll not talk about how a van stopped at a roundabout and instead of going forwards, reversed forcefully into the car behind that might have been a fiat 500

Tucson 1.6t, actually better than expected after having a hybrid variant before.

No adaptive cruise but otherwise well screwed together. Not sure if I'd pay 20k+ for one mind. Lane assist is shat and can't find a way to turn it off. Nobs better than this touch screen nonsense.

Steering wheel button on the wheel itself? Needs a 3 second hold to turn it off on my Kona.

I’ve mostly gone back to petrol vehicles now and had a LexusLBX that was interesting; one of those self charging hybrids, which seems strange to me. Nice interior, good size but pretty forgettable.

Kia (and Hyundai) have a driver only a/c button, which is a good idea on a bev.

Polestar 2 is my current favourite elec vehicle, especially as it’s a hatchback. Range seems to be 230-260 miles, but I just charge it every couple of days at around 60-odd percent. Quite chuckable, and adequate accel.

BYD is an outlier, nothing horrendous, but a bit alien with lots of vocal warnings (eg “check door for cyclist” when it detects something in blind spot and door handle moved etc) Not a great drive though tbh, weird spongy steering and delay in response from the throttle ruin it, but the fix is probably just a software update away.

No more Tesla hire cars as they are too expensive to repair apparently.

Hired a Golf for a week and, despite the awful touchscreen tech which is far slower than the Asian/ Scandi manufacturers, it was nice to drive something that requires zero planning and could drive anywhere at the drop of a hat. Drives well, discrete but felt less well built than the Polestar.
Cheers,

Ian

Fiat 500L (although being in Italy they said Cinquecento which confuses my English knowledge of cars) with 116,000km and is totally battered

The overall approach of the rental company was 'we don't give a fuck' so I'm hoping the same applies when I return it because there's too many dents and scuffs to count. I reckon it's their 'straniero' car, reserved specifically for those who don't speak fluent Italian and therefore lack the vocabulary to make a meaningful complaint.

Hired a car yesterday at Stansted to go to a funeral. ( 🙁 )

Used this crowd for the first time to cover the £2k excess on the basic hire car insurance. Cost around 30% of the price that the hire car company wanted. Fast and easy online process. Would use again (although others are available and your experience may vary).

Flying visit home at the weekend so only needed a car from Airport to Hotel, Hotel to folks house then folks house back to the airport so I went cheap and cheerful - VW Polo or similar.

similar meant a Fiat Panda something.something l hybrid. It was tiny and gutless but the main takeaway was the fact I didn't feel comfortable driving it at the motorway speed limit of 120kph. So I kept at 110 max. It felt all over the place at 70mph. I had assumed that most new cars could at least drive the motorway limit but apparently not.

Still, £45 for 2 days so can't complain

Kind of related, for transport out in Singapore we used Grab premium which is their equivalent of Uber Black.. anyway, it mostly meant we had a Toyota Alphard with leather business class seats (my favourite was the brown) and massaging function.. it was a lovely way to view parts of the city and we were slightly disappointed each time we got to our destination!.. 😂

I mean, the outside is gopping, but as a family transport (6 maybe 7 seats) it was very impressive.. especially with someone else driving it!

2 petrolheads out of 10, but 8 family fun wagons out of 10!

There's a Lexus dealer in Westfield with what I think is the same car, usually displayed in the middle of the shopping centre
https://www.lexus.co.uk/new-cars/lm
I did have a nose around and the interior makes a Range Rover look cheap!
But I think they're over £100k!

On a MPV theme, we have a box-fresh 2025 Chrysler Pacifica in Florida. As far as I can tell the $42k base version which is still a 287bhp V6, comfy leather(ette) seats, tri-zone climate, adaptive cruise, huge high-res screen for wireless CarPlay, super clever folding seats that all disappear into the floor, and more cupholders, storage cubbies and USB sockets than I can count. I massively prefer it over the usual US full-size SUVs, comfy ride but without the high-up roll/floatiness they have.

Such a shame the UK/Europe market is now just van-based things and cramped SUVs.

We have a Hyundai i10 automatic in Malta. Not that much of a lottery when the booking said an i10 or similar. It’s not a bad car; nice leather steering wheel is good to touch.

But the auto box is utter tripe. It doesn’t have a P position 😂 It’s obviously a robotised manual, with a single clutch based on my experience. It spends more time changing gear than in gear accelerating. Not recommended in auto form.

Mind slightly blown. What do you do when you come to a stop - just turn it off before lifting your foot off the brake?

BMW SMGs are also the same, I think the DCTs which replaced them also had no P.

So far I’ve put it in N but I might try leaving it in D and see what happens. It does have a traditional mechanical handbrake so I obviously felt the need to use that 😂

Spain again last week a Renault Captur. After its lane assist trying to kill me on very busy Malaga saturday night and the android auto connecting (the standard sat nav isnt very good) I have to say I quite liked it. The 1 litre had plenty of punch. I would consider buying one when the mini actually falls apart
