Why are road trips so alluring?
Re: Why are road trips so alluring?
I assume that would also have been in your Smart, which would not make a 1300 mile road trip more appealing.

I was looking at other options such as buying something in the microcamper category, which would have made it a bit easier, but still made little sense overall.

He’s on the insurance for my Ferrari and we did consider it, but it’s around £1k of fuel all in and a solid two day drive each way meaning you also need accommodation. Compared to a £200 plane ticket, that amount of time/money just didn’t make sense when it’s not the point of the trip.
However, Gavster & I are considering a road trip together, possibly in Aug/Sep. Watch this space

Because my car is rubbish at off-road trips.

That sounds like a very specific aim. What's driving the requirement?Gavster wrote: Fri May 31, 2024 10:14 pm It simply didn’t make any sense unfortunately. My aim is to live in a specific part of Italy for a month which is 1362 miles away. If it was a holiday with a decent amount of time then a road trip could have been on the cards. However the cost difference between driving vs flight + train made it a no brainer.
Edit: no pun intended.

He’s going to eat out of date pizza and pasta for a month to see if he survives.
How about not having a sig at all?

I'm spending a month living on the Mediterranean diet, so have moved to Marina di Casalvelino which is in Cliento on the lower part of the west coast of Italy. Just a couple of miles from Pioppi which is the small town where Ancel Keys lived when he researched the diet. The plan is to stay in one place for the entire month, so driving seemed like an unnecessary delay and also, having a vehicle here was unnecessary. Besides, I fancy my chances on a vespa for a few daysDeskJockey wrote: Sun Jun 02, 2024 5:05 pmThat sounds like a very specific aim. Additionally, the reason for doing this is because the Med diet is famous around the world for being healthy, but a lot of people don't realise the original Med diet is inherently tied to a particular culture and geography, therefore it doesn't truly translate to anywhere else in the world. The UNESCO definition regonises this, noting how it's a way of life, rather than a list of foods. That's not to say that olive oil loses it's healthiness if you drink it in Swindon, however it's simply one component of a 'diet' that also includes factors such as walking, sleep patterns, localised food, conviviality and commensalism.

On Netflix there was a show about people who live very long, can’t remember the name, I just had it on in the background. But they get to either Greece or Italy - this small village where everyone seems to get to 100 and are still healthy and mobile. Turns out that Mediterranean diet aside a big thing is that they all frequently climbed this massive hill to visit a church every week which seemed to have a big impact.
I remember feeling like my fitness had improved massively after just 8 days in Lisbon.
Maybe we should start building artificial hills in our cities

Were (light) manual labour jobs a factor too ? Heavy labour will fcuk your body up but sitting in front of a screen the whole time isn't good either.Mito Man wrote: Tue Jun 04, 2024 6:06 pm On Netflix there was a show about people who live very long, can’t remember the name, I just had it on in the background. As experiments go, that sounds rather cool.

I'm willing to make the sacrifice to my career if you all fund it for me.
I'll need a £100 a day allowance for food and drink, obviously - has to be the highest quality.

It didn't seem to go through what they did when they were younger, I've found the name "Live to 100" and apparently the second episode I watched partly filmed in Sardinia so not Greece or ItalySundayjumper wrote: Tue Jun 04, 2024 6:59 pmWere (light) manual labour jobs a factor too ? Re: Why are road trips so alluring?
Looking on Hertz for a week in Portugal and this option came up.. not too bad price wise for a week in August and obviously not interested for now, but could be a fun few days out exploring Europe in one of these?
Cheers,
