You beat me to it. How good was that?! Whole family enjoyed the hell out of it. Was pretty cool how they managed to thread the line between a nice warm nostalgic feeling whilst not just ramming in tens of things from the original which served no point at all (I'm looking at you Ghostbusters Frozen Empire).

That's how you do a sequel to a much beloved movie, many years later and don't f*ck it up.

Back to Black

Unsophisticated, romanticised and slightly shallow charting of Amy Winehouse and Blake Fielder-Civil’s relationship. The lead part is played well and the rest are okay. There’s nothing really wrong with the film, but it’s not gonna blow you away either, although worth a watch if you enjoy her music.

However, I particularly enjoyed it from a nostalgic perspective. I used to live one street away from Jefferys Place where she lived for most of the film and I parked my car outside her house before she moved to Camden Square. Occasionally she’d be serving behind the bar in the Hawley Arms around 2009/10 when she had a sober period. When she was in her earlier debauched period she’d buy her late night booze at Booty Wine on Kentish Town Road which was my local under-the-counter booze shop. The whole film was basically set around my old home and the pubs I frequented which made it a trip down memory lane for me personally.

For you 7/10 for me 8.5/10

Must have watched a different version to you. I found it trite, repetitive (same basic plot as the first two), and lacking the humour that made the original good. Lots of recurring characters, but that couldn't save it.

Entirely meh.

Oh thank God it wasn’t just me, utter tripe. The Captain or whatever he was looked like he should be in a home, Serge looked equally as bad and the plot was sadly lacking.

If we all liked the same stuff it would be a boring world. I thought it avoided the usual tropes that long-delayed sequels often resort to (hey, remember how you liked that thing in 1985, here it is again! look at the thing!) and despite low expectations, thoroughly enjoyed it.

Anyway, here's my next wild take. Deadpool & Wolverine is loads of fun with some Thick of It level swearing.

I've not seen any reviews yet, but I can imagine they'll fall into two camps of either "1 star, this is just a bunch of knowing gags, boy I hate Reynolds, the MCU is doomed" or "this is exactly what you want to see from a Deadpool movie".

Kong x Godzilla : The New Empire

Eh, it was several monsters kicking the shit out of each other, paced pretty decently, effects were fine (Although sometimes the sense of scale felt off).

Will kill a couple of hours with some beer for most, I'm sure.

I watched it tonight directly because of the contrary opinions here, to see which side I fall on.

It's cheesey, predictable and has a sense of being ironically anachronistic. The stunts are complete fantasy, the shootouts perfectly ridiculous and the characters paper thin. I actually started to dislike it around 30 minutes in, then the credits started rolling, and I'm not sure where the intervening 80+ minutes disappeared to, which is the hallmark of enjoying a film. It's a bit like GTA meets Beverley Hills cop; it's a silly, highly unserious film which made great mindless entertainment. Not as good as Top Gun Maverick, but still a great laugh.

I watched The Holdovers last week.

Very very good and deserving of all the Oscar's hype. Not 100% sure De'Vine Joy Randolph deserved the Oscar but is it a very good performance.

Giamatti is brilliant as always

I appear to love films where very little happens, and yet everything happens.

Loved it. Laughed hard many times.

9.8 it’s this eye, out of 10.

It was brilliant with an astonishing cast. As intended the protagonists main point was played out in the story with both clarity and a dignified sparseness that made it very elegant.

I especially liked the way they portrayed the writing of the book.

8.5/10 panderings.

Recommendation taken - that was really great.

Many laughs.

I like Greg Kinnear and watched Invincible the other night. A feel good story about a guy given a chance to play American Football for his local team. Not much brain needed but a nice lazy movie to watch.

It then reminded me about Flash of Genius, another Greg Kinnear film.

Man invents intermittent wiper, fights big corporation, really well acted. I agree it’s a hard sell but it’s really well done.

Yeah, it was stupid and OTT, but I loved it. Jackman was brilliant as Wolverine, hard to see someone stepping into his shoes for this (and no, it shouldn't be Cavill).

Over $1BN at the box office already, well on track to be the highest grossing R-rated movie by some margin. Jokes about "Until he's 90" but Disney will be desperate to get him to sign on for another one.

Oh, also watched Bad Boys - Ride or Die. Doesn't pretend to be anything other than a rediculous action movie, and it's all the better for it. Enjoyable and an easy 7/10.

Needs more Porsche 911 though, even if they did do a little 964Turbo cameo.

It's not as good as I remember, honestly.

Went to the cinema tonight to watch Trap. The trailer was pretty good so I was hoping the film would be.

However, it does feel like a bit of a nepo-baby promo and for that reason the actual idea for the story was a bit lost. The idea is good. Not going to spoiler it since it’s a new release, but since it’s set out in the opening credits, M Night Shyamalan’s daughter is in it.
