The Daily Mail

Post by Jobbo »

Yes, it’s dead for me. I can’t read it because I never accepted cookies from them and now they try to force me to buy a basic subscription or allow cookies.

Since a lot of their articles were already behind the M+ paywall I had looked at it less for a while so now I’ve just deleted my bookmark.

Why on earth would you want to read the Daily Mail, I hear you ask? Well it’s simple: it’s been the biggest online news site for a while and it’s always worth seeing what clickbait and lies it is peddling to see what they are trying to froth people up about today. Plus there is a bit of Hello style voyeurism about the sidebar of shame 😄 I don’t think I’ll miss it - the sad thing is many people won’t realise they’ve changed things because they always allowed the Mail to track them.

I wouldn’t say I’m an avid reader but I peruse the Mail, along with a number of other news sources on both sides to try to form my own balanced view.

Reading just the Mail or just the Guardian gives a person a very biased world view.

Wonder if 12ft ladder would be able to circumvent the paywall?

Is this a DM amnesty? Yes, me too.

I know what they’re all about so don’t take every article too seriously. It’s also fun to try and guess the vibe of the comments section on certain stories. I’m always right

I haven’t read it in ages but always end up getting links to articles.

I’ve not noticed a paywall with them so guess I’m looking at the wrong articles.

I actively avoid clicking links to their (and other tabloid) articles. Get really annoyed with myself if I accidentally do click one as any click helps these hate-rags justify their credibilty for advertising, and therefore keeps them in circulation :( .

I felt like that in principle but I read it purely because everyone does - you can see what guff they're talking and I can keep tabs on what my mother is likely to believe because it's been her paper of choice for 40+ years. Like it or not it influences opinion and it's worth being aware of the views they air.

They created Mail+ as a paid subscription thing probably late last year from memory - not that long ago. I thought at the time that it was likely to permeate into more articles but that it would be interesting to see what they leave unpaywalled to allow everyone to read; those articles would doubtless be either good for advertising revenue or potentially influential so need as much reach as possible.

Funnily enough I haven't had the same message on my PC about cookies yet - just my phone so far.

After some playing around, I can't even open the Privacy Settings on my PC; I have clearly disabled so much on their website to avoid the constant adverts that it won't load it

I will refer to the Daily Mail, and other trash such as The Sun etc, simply because they have amounts of cultural capital, which means that ignoring them would be naive, especially when my job revolves around understanding why/how people in our country think about food. The Mail is the starting point for a lot of people's ideas about health and diet.

My primary source of news personally, not professionally, is The Week.

Well, I didn't have "Discovering Simon reads the Daily Mail" on the 2024 bingo card, that's for sure.

@Jobbo , just open the dailymail site in Incognito mode in Chrome and it should work fine. If that doesn't then drop me a mail to the usual address and I'll fix it for you.

I also read it irregularly - a fair few bits in the protest thread recently came from the Heil, because inbetween the rampant hyperbole about the protestors being the reason this FINE NATION is COLLAPSING etc, they had some chunks of the court reporting in there.

Which is way more than The fucking Canary had, who were equally as hyperbolic, just in the opposite direction - to an embarrassing degree to anyone who claims to lean to the left frankly.

Also, always know what your enemy is up to ;)

I really don’t want to - if they make it harder to read in my usual browser then I’m happy not to be contributing to their clicks.

This Thread Would Be Better Suited to The Hate Forum? But it’s optimistically about the death of the Daily Mail 😄

I've never felt so "seen" as the kids say.

This for me too, I'm actively avoiding giving that sh1trag any clicks, where possible.

Same for all the papers tbh, but this one especially.
