Could be something in the drivers' contracts? Discussions over radio about what they've spoken about each weekend, so it seems to be something set in stone, predating the current form of the car. They probably didn't expect to be competing for the championship this year and are stuck with that shitty self imposed rule now.

Also have to remember that this is a brand new Mclaren team who are still very much amateurs when it comes to winning. They've had the fastest car the last 6/7 races and keep finding ways of screwing up what seem like simple decisions. Or maybe they'll forever be like Ferrari when it comes to strategy.

Actually watched this race

1. I have to assume that there was some prior agreement in McLaren that - if they maintained their 1-2 status at the end, then the driver that was ahead at the first corner of lap1 would be allowed to take the win. Although this was never mentioned or even implied. Failing that - their strategy just made zero sense to me. :?

1b. Great to see them back at the sharp end though.

2. I glol'd  when Teh Stapp made that move, and his race engineer's response was refreshing. Stapp fans are very like Trump fans however - many calling for Hambone to be punished.

I enjoyed these:

The FIA investigation actually concluding in no further action said “The driver of car 44 could have done more to avoid the accident”
Absolutely ludicrous. Even Horner couldn’t defend Max in his interview after the race. Even his engineer told him he won’t complain to the stewards.

In isolation I'd probably make the same call, but taking into account his history of bending every rule to the max(imum) and forcing other drivers off-track - I'd have slapped what I could on him. His team are quite happy with his "assertive" driving style, so it's down to the stewards to discourage him.....

Give Max an inch and he'll take a mile. We'll now see him divebombing and locking up into everyone.

2024 F1 championship is turning out similar to the presidential election. Looks more like the winner will be the one who makes the least stupid mistakes. And both Max and Mclaren are seemingly in a race to make the most stupid mistakes.

Only watched the brief highlights, but the MV team radio was amazing. Lambiase seems to have had enough of Max.

I mean he could. He could have stopped and pulled over to the side at the beginning of the straight to give Max enough room.

Ridiculous statement from the FIA.

With Max's grid penalty, it would be great if someone would do the decent thing and knock him off tomorrow while he's bumping his way through. Combine that with McLaren sorting themselves out and prioritising Norris and this WDC might just get a little more interesting.

Anyone following this weekend?
Russell wins the race, Hamilton second. Toto looks to be the most upset team boss ever following a 1-2.
Shortly afterwards Russell is investigated for an underweight car. Turns out Mercedes gave the car to the FIA with the car not fully empty of fuel. When it is fully empty it is 1.5kg underweight and thus disqualified.

So weirdly some error happened and the team knew they would likely be DSQ. I’m surprised they then tried to hide it to the FIA by not giving them a car fully empty of fuel though. You’d think that would make the penalty even worse.

Snigger, Russell’s constant bleating on the radio in past races really turned me against him which is odd as I’ve always rooted for the British drivers in the past.

Yeah, also find him hard to warm to. My favourite driver of the new generation was Norris but he’s also gone the same
way the past few years.

Managed to watch this one live for a change, really great race. Shame Merc lost the 1-2, but the main thing is the cars all look so evenly matched, we could have a real vintage second half of the season. If Max didn't have such an unassailable lead this would have been one of the great seasons, but alas I fear they're all just going to take too many points off each other to stand a chance of catching him.

Still shaping up to be a good season though, looking forward to watching a few more races if I can.

The car still had 2.5l of fuel in it and the weight check is when it's been drained.

Also, Sainz now confirmed at Williams for a "multi year deal" starting in 2025.

And Perez isn't being kicked out mid year.

One stop being blamed for it but I find that suspicious. Wolff was unhappy as the cars crossed the chequered flag, did the team instantly know? How did the team give the car to the FIA to be weighed with the exact quantity of fuel to meet the minimum weight. I don't think the team can weigh the car themselves under park ferme conditions. They can only do certain things whilst being watched by the FIA.
There was a picture on twitter with a close up of his tyres and amazingly they weren't extremely worn either. You could see the wear indicators across the whole tread with a couple mm of tread remaining. And apparently the rubber pick up thing they do post race isn't really a guarantee as the FIA can ask you to put on a set of tyres without pickup if they think you're taking the piss. I think however that every car has been overweight since the new wide turbo halo cars came about so it's never been a problem in recent years.

I remember that merc had problems getting near the weight at the start of the season, so this was a big surprise.

It feels like missed ballast, both cars were held together with gaffer tape on the grid.

Seeing lots of rumours of Newey to Aston Martin on Twitter. No smoke without fire. Disappointing though.
