Do new BMWs still have the ‘sitting in a car enjoying a takeaway anti windscreen fogging engine heat scavenging ventilation function whilst the engine is turned off’*
That’s always a good trick most people don’t know about.
*may not actually be called that?

How about not having a sig at all?

And again. FFS.
Ebay non-genuine tool but not total garbage, the bolt is just bloody tight. I started trying to drill it out. No luck. My drill bits won’t touch it. I’ve ended up learning stuff though. This is the type of bolt:
The collar spins around and the head is hardened to stop you drilling it, as above, BUT there is a tool for this situation. The bolt is actually made of three parts. The tool removes the hardened part & the ring, to reveal a spline. Matching spline tool is rammed in as an interference fit and you can - hopefully - wind it out. If that fails you do at least have accesss to the non-hardened part to drill it as normal.

I’ll see if I can get one of those somewhere.

Done the usual…
Try to tighten first ?
Belt the end with a bit of brass or similar hard using a lump hammer ?
Taken it by surprise by saying “ hey a squirrel “ then heaving on it ?

Also, as with every car I’ve ever had with built-in nav, the maps have not been updated since the car was delivered
I know everyone prefers Google or waze but I don’t like having a phone stuck to the dash if I can avoid it and I don’t have CarPlay, and as long as the maps are up to date (!) the BMW nav has never failed to get me somewhere. BMW want loadsamoney for updates but there’s internet ways of doing it. Taps nose.

Tried tightening it, yeah. I wondered whether a freezing spray would help ? Aluminium expanding/contracting faster than steel might give a tiny bit more freedom. But that means buying another key with still no guarantee it'll work. I'm going to go with the destructive tool method.V8Granite wrote: Fri Jul 19, 2024 7:49 am Done the usual…

Re: Your fleet running reports
That tool looks like it'll do the job, but yeah most locknuts are just a PITA. In order to avoid this kinda crap everyone ends up under-torquing them, which then rather compromises their primary role.....
Mr Dave Flew gave me similar advice to Dave in relation to stubborn bolts (when I was asking if there was a particular brand of penetrating oil he recommended) - smack the head with a lump hammer and centrepunch.

That reminded me that the live data license on the Zoe has expired. I've started a conversation with Renault about renewing which isn't as straightforward as you'd like because Brexit created issues severed the link with the online store (is what I was told). Last time it took a good few months to resolve.

This is where having a welder helps. Hold a 19mm nut in front of it with some grips, weld it to the bolt through the hole.
2mins per bolt max.
Probably take longer to get the welder out of the garage and run an extension cable

I have a welder and I’ve tried that before but never been able to make anything stick. Also on these wheels the bolt is very deeply recessed:

Re: Your fleet running reports
I still have a writer & a pile of blank discs.... no idea how long it is since I used them though ! This update is done by putting it on a USB stick.
My car is too old to get CarPlay easily, and my wife's has it already as a factory option.

Re: Your fleet running reports
So are there ways to get map updates for an Alpine INE-W920R (as used in some low-volume sports cars) without going direct to Alpine or NaviExtras?

Re: Your fleet running reports
Errr, probably ? Although Alpine probably stopped doing updates as soon as they could get away with so “latest” might only be a mild update. mhhauto.com is a very good resource, although you do need to pay to join. I’ll take a look later.mik wrote: Fri Jul 19, 2024 10:40 am So are there ways to get map updates for an Alpine INE-W920R (as used in some low-volume sports cars) without going direct to Alpine or NaviExtras?
@integrale_evo is an Alpine perv, any suggestions ?
Re: Your fleet running reports
Appreciated - I've never bothered updating it so the map is circa 2013. Which is generally fine, and if not I just revert to Waze with the phone in the powered Brodit thing.

I will have to eat my words. New logbook issued 17th July. Looks like it really did sell immediately after I left !Sundayjumper wrote: Sun Jul 14, 2024 10:15 amYeah, I just noticed that. It wasn't sold at about midday yesterday when we left and they've had it since May so it's quite a coincidence for it to suddenly sell now ! I suspect shenanigans or moving stock around. I'll check in a week or so to see if a new logbook has been issued.Jobbo wrote: Sun Jul 14, 2024 10:02 am That one is sold already so clearly the awful admin fee didn’t put someone off.
