Today's fleet running report is someone on the M3 forum getting arsey with me because someone else told them I might be selling the car and him being very cross I won't sell it to him tomorrow for under trade value.

Mrs Newt gave me a birthday surprise by buying me a car. I was taken back by her largesse but not so much that I would not update the forum with the traditional new car guessing game.

TBH most of them don't.

It's all FB groups now, but my recent discovery is WhatsApp groups...the latter is something of an experience. Just hundred of people yelling over each other and quoting random old messages, on top of people posting voice messages, random GIF's everywhere :evil: Boomers nightmare it is.

Bring back Newsgroups is all I can say.

It’s the end of the road for the eqv300, after 2.5 years with this and a year with the identically looking v300.

In many ways it’s the perfect family car, it’s comfortable, spacious, and has a decent driving position, despite its size, it’s quite easy to drive and park due with light steering and enough glass to give visibility, and it’s not a bad place to be overall.

The silence gives a RR/Maybach esque v12 luxury feel compared to the diesel, but the car’s weight is its biggest pitfall. The batteries in the chassis mean its too heavy to legally tow anything, and they seriously affect the ride quality. Passengers who normally don’t get car sick have felt ill, even on short trip and it seemed more susceptible to poor road surfaces than the lowered mx5.

There are too many electric cars for our infrastructure, I previously ran an early iPace but the availability of working chargers is now noticeably worse. On top of this, the range isn’t enough, sub 200 in the summer and 130 on cold winter days. Despite the tax breaks, the downsides of going from diesel to electric means I will be glad to see the back of it. The other thing is that your mates all assume you will drive to the pub and give them all a lift, I’ve also been approached many times by drunk people assuming I’m their uber.

I had ordered a new facelift v300, at an eyewatering (for a van with seats) £90k, not even mentioning the depreciation of the ev. Then, last month’s we broke down, 8 miles from home, it took 9 hours for recovery, and they werent equipped to help a vulnerable disabled passenger. I was so disappointed with Mercedes and RAC that I threw my dummy out of the pram and cancelled the order.

Picking up the replacement tomorrow….tbc

Both our cars have this style of locknut, and this is exactly what I imagine the keys will do if I so much as look at them sideways. :?

The XJ has shit locking nuts too but in a different way - they’re hugely oversized, and the socket grips the outside of them making it even more oversized to the point that it touches the wheels. Put electrical tape round the socket but still scuffed the wheel to shit.

If it's not had the wheel nuts (non locking) changed in it's life, buy a full set, or at least make sure you can get a socket on them all.

They swell up and make it impossible to get a socket on them.

Worst. Design. EVER.

The Defender ones are 27mm which is lovely as they are normally flogged on by farmers 😂

Touch wood I’ve never had a problem with locknuts but whenever anyone’s touches the wheels, I check and re-torque and inevitable remove the copper grease, lube, dirt, gravel etc that is all over the bolts.

Yeah they’re the same in that aspect as Ford too. I always have a few spare nuts for the Defender and go round changing the swollen ones once a year.
Nobody wants swollen nuts.

The X350 XJ's locking nuts were the only ones that didn't break. The OEM nuts were made of chocolate.
