Dropped my Porsche off at National Windscreens in Derby earlier. They seem like a good bunch of lads, but it was worrying having to leave it in their cramped parking bays and premises for a few hours. Fingers crossed...

Couple of very minor updates,

Fitted an evo front lip to the compact. Resisted for a long while because I didn’t want to ‘M3’ it, but they do look a lot better with it. Sharpens it up nicely without reducing ground clearance, also covers up some scuffs and scrapes on the bumper



The corroded mirror bases have been annoying me, chucked some satin black over a pair of spare standard ones. Base model spec




I think I’m going to do the bases satin black to add a bit of contrast, more like the oe ones, and break up the big blob of colour a bit.

Still has a sticky calliper, so not actually used it yet this year. Decided to battle on and try and remove them without dropping the engine. Also had to remove the drivers seat to disconnect the handbrake cable from the handle…

Anyway, after a fair amount of swearing, they were off!

Once off, they’re actually the easiest ones to strip and clean I’ve ever done.

I just had the tensioner and aux belts replaced on my Mondeo as it was starting to chirp. Then I had the front dampers and top mounts replaced as one of the dampers had burst, and an alignment. Then a set of new Toyo Proxes. Basically I've spent what I paid for it all over again in the space of a month.

Finally it's driving like a new car again, lovely old job for 183,000 miles. Literally a day later the PAS pump went, so that's being done on Monday.

Enough now!

Apparently, it wasn't enough now.

The day after I got it back the PAS pump went. Another £620 kerching! At least they did it while I was in France last week.

I've sold the black and red smart and am now the owner of a silver and blue, ex-Sundayjumper, newer, lower mileage Smart (previously seen on this thread)

Driving home it felt faster than the previous Smart, which I put down to being newer etc, however it's really nippy when it comes on boost. A short while later, during a top speed run , it went into limp mode. Closer inspection at my local racing Smart car performance specialist, they discovered it's been mapped and the limp mode occured becuase it needs a new boost pressure sensor. Should be an easy fix.

My friend who has a Smart has just replaced his with a Smart. He killed the first one by driving it through a very deep puddle; water got into the electrics or something and the alternator died. With a list of faults already he threw in the towel and got another. A convertible this time with a better spec, that doubtless he will not maintain but will keep on trucking for a fair while.

It must have been deep ! The air intake is quite high up, it’s on the other side, symmetrical to the fuel flap that you can see in Gavster’s pic. And with everything being at the back it’s all fairly well protected… as long as you keep moving.

It must have been deep ! The air intake is quite high up, it’s on the other side, symmetrical to the fuel flap that you can see in Gavster’s pic. And with everything being at the back it’s all fairly well protected… as long as you keep moving.

It didn't kill the alternator directly - water got in somewhere at the front, made stuff damp and I think it shorted. It was a shed so putting it out of its misery was a good thing in my view. The windscreen popped out a bit whenever you shut the doors.

Really need to swap the XF for something now as I'm getting earache about it.

Still have no idea what to get, don't want to spend much as need to save for house move. Just renewed warranty for another year for 700 quid, between that and 200 quid of diesel a month, it seems a waste for what it's used for now, which is a trip to the coast a couple of times a month and commuting if I'm away in the Kuga.

It's just one of those phrases in many an ad... no, having discovered the remap I expect more ponderings along those lines (and cruise control for the roadtrips, obvs).

I’m having a crisis. The sensible cars (Bentley, RR) have gone and the Cayenne should go in the next few days. We need to drive to Koln in August and as much as people will shout “Road trip ! Awesome ! Take a fun car !” it’s an eight hour motorway slog and I want to be comfortable. My wife will absolutely not put up with any of the fun cars for this.

I’m going round in circles looking at 5, 6, 7 Series and can’t make a decision. Should I just give up and buy a Mondeo ? This one is local and dull. Which is basically the criteria right now.
