You want a BMW i3. Best city car there is. With a 5 mile commute you can buy the cheapest early ones as range isn't a problem. Cabin pre-conditioning. Carbon fibre bodywork so no carpark dings. Fast as shit off a shovel up to 35 mph and quite fun.

Today's jobs - front shocks & gearbox oil & filter change.

The shocks were easier than expected, and have made a huge difference to how it drives. I may have been slightly unfair in my previous criticism. I'm still getting rid of it though.

Gearbox oil change is horrid. The refilling bit anyway, you have to fill until it overflows, down your arm and all over the floor. At least twice. Why they can't come up with a less messy way of doing it I don't know. The oil was dirty but not burnt and the filter was the original from when the car was built. Worth doing for peace of mind but doesn't seem to have made any difference to the shifting. That's probably testament to how good the ZF 8sp 'box is.

To be fair, my brain works (or worked) in the completely opposite way. When I got a job in London all those years ago, I knew I wasn't going to be doing loads of miles every day because I was getting the train. so I bought my e46 M3.

To be fair, my brain works (or worked) in the completely opposite way. When I got a job in London all those years ago, I knew I wasn't going to be doing loads of miles every day because I was getting the train. so I bought my e46 M3.

I'd not feel comfortable leaving a nice car at the station. So something like gavster's Smart, £200 insurance, £35 VED, and a slight fuel saving over one of the other cars, works out £5-£10 per week and I'm happy doing that for the peace of mind.

(I'm optimistically hoping for minimal depreciation, cheap cars are limited how far they can fall, as long as it's got an MOT it's always got some value)

Yeah, I was actually pondering one of these recently to replace the MINI. Work plans have jumbled everything up a bit. Wife needs a car for local trips and obvs. she can't use it if it's sat at the station.

Driving across town this evening, the bm started chirping like circadas, which soon progressed into a squeal when off the throttle. I thought it might be a belt slipping so opened the bonnet and saw that it had spat the belt off.

I took off some of the covers and moved the fan to discover that it had also spat half the crank pulley onto the undertray. Fortunately it's just the bit that drives the ac compressor. I'll get it to the garage and get all the belts and tensioners changed at the same time.

The tuna has given me the estimate. They're doing the crank pully and I've told them to do the full belts and tensioner kit. Both front lower suspension arms and anti roll bar bushes.

£1400.

My wallet is unhappy. I'd better do the swirl flap delete soon as the EGR and swirl flaps are the only two items left on the "known issue" list.

yeah, I guess if you have the space, it's kind of an easier justification.

One of my issues is i can fit 2 cars on my drive easily and they can both get in and out, any more and they'd be blocking each other or parking in front of the fence where I don't particularly want to park. Even the idea of having 3 cars would just turn into hassle (though I suspect I will go that route eventually).

Went to Baston car show yesterday with the eldest and had an impromptu oversteer moment in the TT when a car forced me onto the gravel edge of the road. It straightens up lovely and didn’t even have time to Bib the fucker who forced me over

There were some lovely cars at the show, I spent a bit of time in an Ineos and still want one, the weight is far too much but when sitting inside, it makes a G Wagon feel like it’s made of lightweight steel. It could be a mental affliction.

My eldest is absolutely dead set on a Dodge Challenger red eye, he said it sounds like a mix of Star Wars and Godzilla and he WILL own one. Can’t blame him.

I do love those Challengers and as with almost all American cars, they look outrageous over here, which makes them even more fun.

Shame that Dodge recently binned that model Challenger off. They've also canned the supercharged V8 and gone electric.

New model is called the Daytona, and is apparently the world's first all electric muscle car yeah, I'm sure the typical Challenger owner will love that!

Further proof that peak car design/engines are behind us.

100% agree, it sounds and looks great fun and is so overpowered it had to be fun to drive.

I had a nosy around a Grenadier and ended up quite liking it. Something to look at again once they’ve blown their brains out in depreciation.
