My dad didn’t want to drive the Caterham to its service because the new dealer is located deep within Surrey in the most stupid location ever surrounded by 200 speed bumps.

This journey was not without its dramas as my indicators stopped working after 2 miles of the 180 mile round trip. The good thing about Surrey is that people are generally oblivious to indicators.

Had a good look round, car is tripping its hazard light fuse, problem is on the right hand side of the car as the left side indicators work. Annoyingly lock/unlock the car and it flashes the hazards and trips the fuse which kills everything. Unplugged all the indicators and some bits of accessible wiring loom and still blowing the fuse so I’ve ordered a new hazard switch from a Rover 200 at £18 rather than the Land Rover one @£150 and a new relay.

Whilst I was digging around underneath the car looking for any damaged wiring I thought seeing as I’m already covered in actual horse shit I might as well change the steps

Old ones were pretty corroded and kept getting flagged on the MOT.

The steps have holes underneath for draining. I liberally ACF50 inside as they rust from the inside out. This then dripped out back into my eye whilst I was lying underneath it. I’m hoping it acts as an antibacterial against the horse shit because I don’t wish to get pink eye again and it stung like a bitch.

Just needs a V8 now.

Got a little project tomorrow. My niece bought a mini Baker Street last week. The roof has been wrapped at some point and looks horrendous. Bad staining that has market the wrap. Quoted £400 to replace it so I’m going to go at it with wet and dry then the DA. See how it comes up. It’s fucked anyway so worst case we just remove it .

Both front lower wishbones changed on the Yeti, along with the disks and pads for good measure. Will see how the MOT goes on Tuesday.

I’ve given up with the Range Rover. The new headrests are a huge improvement but now that my shoulders can actually touch the seat back, it’s just highlighting that the seat is a weird shape too. The top few inches are quite hard and force me into a hunched position - just like the original headrests did. If I slump down a few inches my shoulders fit into the soft part of the seat and I imagine it would be quite comfortable. That’s what normal-sized people must be experiencing. Ideal for trophy wives and small men who buy big cars. I’m not that core market.

We’re driving to Köln in August and I can’t face doing it in this car. Very disappointing.

That’s a shame. But at least you got to try one, find out and probably get your money back when you move it on.

I’ve been test driving a few cars and my daughter’s suggestion is I try a Panamera, sort of a middle ground between big SUV and sports car.. maybe that would work for you and is probably one of the few cars you haven’t actually owned as yet. The estate is a good looking car, and even comes with a V8

Upgraded the rear speakers on the Defender whilst I had it all apart looking for damaged wiring I remembered that I never changed the rears Only been 5 years.

Small 4 inch jobbies - but you know what they say about men with small speakers…

Anyway, sounds pretty damn good now.

Got an advisory for perishing tyres, but they'll last till the autumn. Everything else was flawless. Not bad for an 11 year old car.

Also whilst I was checking the car in on the dealers portal last night one of the add-ons they offered was to supply a fit a dashcam. It's a Nextbase 322GW, which gets reasonable reviews. Supplied with the 32GB u3 Go pack (memory card and pouch) and proper hard wired kit, that's about £150 of parts and they offered it all fitted for £199, and as my wife has been asking for one for a while I was happy to do that and save my fingers and stress of doing it myself, routing the cable etc.

Seems perfectly good for the Yeti. Just need to teach her how to use it properly.

On the way back from Brighton we hit a weird rut in the road, like it had separated widthways. We hit it hard and it made one hell of a bang. Yesterday I noticed the glovebox wasn’t sitting right. All the plastic on the passenger side has shattered into many small pieces. I’m now on the lookout for a denim blue glovebox.

Also in other news, a GT86 is no match for an overweight middle aged man in an ML500. It was a good fun play but it was a moody young person so he probably thought I disrespected him in his car. Whatever happened to the friendly wave or thumbs up from an impromptu bit of road fun ?

IIRC the origin of the flying colours thing was to piss off JL because he held the opinion that you either pass the MOT or you fail, it's not like an exam where you can get a higher level of pass that could be considered a 'better' pass. Therefore it's a binary yes/no outcome, ergo, you cannot pass "with flying colours". It was at that point that everyone started saying "with flying colours" about a getting an MOT done. Therefore, the crux of the joke is that flying colours are applied to any MOT pass, regardless of advisories.

I last e-chatted with JL May 2023 to ensure he was aware of the news regarding YK

You'll be pleased to know that (at that time) he still had many of the old toys (LandCruiser, RS4, Quads yada yada) and he did share an "amusing" anecdote relating to the boat he and his pal were getting ready for service, a leaking under-floor fuel tank, and the fact that you lock fuel pumps trigger on over there (a la USA) and the pump then justs switches itself off at the click when the tank is full. Without over-sharing, the anecdote included an alternative version of filling the boat up with fuel.
