What.Three.Words
Re: What.Three.Words
But you have to use the app to generate the three words, and you have to have a phone signal to speak to someone. If you’re capable of that, you’re capable of sharing your location from google maps or whatever; probably easier, in fact, if signal is limited.

You might not be able to see map features but you should still get your 3 word locationwhat3words wrote:Does the app work without phone signal?
Without phone signal, the app functions the same as when you have no data connection: you can view the location of any what3words address you enter. You can also navigate to it using compass mode.
Re: What.Three.Words
I was on an induction call for a client and they like to bang on about using w3w for sites etc. Was on it with another random who does something with mountain rescue (volunteer I presume), and he totally tore into it and said it was a disaster for them. I think along the lines of bad signals, small errors from people calling etc was leading to a lot of mix ups when they were trying to help people.
He sounded like he knew what he was talking about, was great to watch the client guy being put in his place.

Your phone still has GPS. Android and iOS both have emergency location sharing built in. There's no easier way than using the built-in function; certainly not going into an app, finding your three words, then calling someone and telling them over the phone.jamcg wrote: Fri Mar 24, 2023 7:34 amYou might not be able to see map features but you should still get your 3 word locationwhat3words wrote:Does the app work without phone signal?

The only use case I could see for myself is at a big concert or festival but there’s never any signal anyway so
I’m out.
I’m out.

Re: What.Three.Words
I've looked at the W3Ws at our house and because of the small size of the squares, there are a few. One of them has 'lawyers' in it, one has the name of one of our cats. But there are so many words if you click on a few squares that it's pretty unlikely you won't find something vaguely relevant.nuttinnew wrote: Wed Jun 19, 2024 11:41 amClicking around there, many are apt and shirley not coincidental.
