The stalk is the cheap & easy bit to try (if I was even vaguely organized I'd know where the one I've got from when I fitted cruise is The kits are cheap enough you could fit cruise so if it isn't the stalk it's still had a positive outcome, easier & lazier toing and froing targas). A squirt of cleaner might even do the trick. Bcm'll need coding so it's a bit more agg. than just plugging and trying.

Well, I sprayed a liberal amount of contact cleaner into the stalk and that does indeed seem to have done the trick!

Ah no, went out and tried it again, still intermittent/ only when also pulling the main beam flash, and then not every time. Let me see if I can get the wheel off, then it’ll be worth ordering a new stalk.

Could be a broken wire in the stalk at a guess, had it before on our merc.

Audi has thrown up every possible error today. I’m hoping it’s low voltage on the battery as per my googling, I’m assuming it’s on its original so coming up 5 years old. Car has been stood for a week.

Or I need a new engine, gearbox, airbags, parking brake, tyre pressure sensors, ABS bits, headlights, traction control system etc etc.

Zoe came with a "carbon fiber" front splitter which didn't look entirely wrong (obviously not CF, but perhaps a cost option added by the first owner), didn't think much of it.

At some point in the last week or so it must have caught a kerb as it was bent and had ripped through one screw, so I decided to take a closer look. Fitted with an assortment of differently sized wood screws. Because why not? Managed to unscrew them all and bin the offending item.



Marvel at the quality of the weave!


I'm keen to test whether I can feel any difference in the downforce generated at the front.

THRILLING FUEL CONSUMPTION NEWS

38.0mpg on my drive to work this morning according to the app (yes, there’s an app for that), or 38.2mpg on the OBC in the car.

How have you managed that

Have you done a proper brim-to-brim check on yours ? I've just filled up and mine appears to be over-reading by about 20% so that 38 is less than 32 in reality.

My average MPG continues to creep up, currently at 51mpg since I bought it 2500 miles ago. I think my motoring is quite well suited to hybrid life and I’ll definitely have another and will go full EV when they can charge quickly everywhere!

I only went out to do a simple oil & filter service. It ended up like this.

I noticed the camera mounted in the bumper was a bit wonky and this is the only way to get at the back of it. Still, it's an opportunity to do my favourite thing with a new purchase - complain about all the broken & missing bits due to dodgy previous work. Disappointing that a newish car with full main dealer history should have anything amiss but here we are. Super glue on the plastics. Drilled out two seized & broken undertray bolts. Why do manufacturers keep putting steel screws into aluminium ? It *always* causes problems. But we have helicoils so that's sorted for now.

I was slightly alarmed at the state of the air filters:

That's not old & new, those are the two that came out It turns out this is normal. It's not one filter per bank, it's one filter per turbo. The small turbo runs all the time, the big one only kicks in about 2500rpm, so unless you're hoofing it all the time the second filter gets very little use. Seems like a waste to change it each time; in future I think I'll move the clean one across and put the fresh new filter on the clean side.

Having tested the Zoe today I can confirm that there's no appreciable difference to the performance or handling, leading me to conclude that the "carbon fiber" "front splitter" was just some stick (screw?) on plastic tat that served no purpose. I'm shocked!

I try to avoid letting people know I’m a car person otherwise everyone you know / meet / work with wants help and advice anytime anything ever goes wrong or wants to know your opinions on a couple of bland bore-o-matic white good cars they’re trying to choose between

Not really, no. The Lexus-Lotus chap roped me in to trailer it around a few times, and a previous neighbour asked me to change the alternator on their old Honda CRV. That was a pig of a job - you can see it, get your hands on it, and remove all the bolts no problem but there's no space to actually remove it. I can't remember the solution now. Something to do with slightly mangling the slam panel / radiator support. I wasn't proud of that but it worked. Took me virtually a whole day

If people ask for buying advice I just point them at something dull and reliable. I don't want to hear about my suggestion turning out to be a bad idea. We went through this recently with FiL, we told him to buy a Qashqai, and that's working well so far.

Same. I've been in my current job since January and only one person there knows anything at all about my problem, and that one was completely my fault because I asked them about their car first.

He'd made some comment about having a car that he's not driven for ages, I thought it might be an interesting classic or something, but it turns out it's just a V40 that hasn't been used since he bought a new XC40. He then asked me what I drive and although I try to avoid talking about my cars, I won't actually lie when asked about it directly.
