Diesel, EGR, emissions, blah.

This is what they do. Short runs are terrible for diesels, long runs better, but it happens eventually.

I went for a short drive, I think it pulled slightly more smoothly. Maybe placebo. It must have been reading pressure OK-ish before to not chuck an error code but maybe that gunk was acting as a damper and making the readings sluggish ? We’ll see how it goes.

I also reset the service reminder. I’ll monitor whether the countdown tracks with the actual mileage now.
Never had an EGR/emissions issue and had nothing but Dervs since 2016.
I like to think the spirited drive once or twice a week and fuel additives have countered the short weekday runs (usually 2x1 mile and 2x4 mile journeys), but no way of knowing for sure.

Have you ever opened one of them up for a look inside though ? Mine has full main agent service history and no warning lights. If I wasn't me I'd never have known.

That was Mazda’s ethos when they made the 3.3l straight 6 diesel they launched a year or two ago in the CX60. We all ought to buy one so that there is some evidence of how popular a proper sized engine is. Will do 50mpg apparently, but since I posted the 56mpg from my commute that’s not actually a surprise to me.

I think parking my car in the car port each night means it takes less time to warm up in the morning; my mpg has definitely improved since moving house. And that’s despite having 20 less miles of motorway each way.

JLR intervals are nonsense. 21k miles between oil changes on the later cars - no way

Having never owned an auto before, I tried 'two foot launching' the car this evening - not hard, barely 1500rpm, and only for a moment, with the brakes held down quite hard.

It was enough to surprise me, it launches hard.

Believe the ZF8s don't like being held on the brakes under a load greater than idle for too long a period so I guess I'll need to watch some videos/read some articles etc about how that's supposed to work, as opposed to just 'trying it' and overheating the gearbox or something

Not like it needs launching on the brakes, it's quick enough off the line as it is, more just curious about how you emulate a clutch dump launch in an auto.

Took the manifold off the l200 2 years ago now (we were doing valve clearances and it has a weird split intake that goes in at both the side and top of the head so had to come off to take off rocker cover) and it looked like that. Cleaned with soda while it was off. I also run an egr electronic bypass so my valve just sits closed which makes the economy slightly less shit. It's no wonder there are issues with vnt vanes sticking, egr valve breaking and dpfs blocking up with the shite that's in the fuel. If I didn't need one for towing I'd have a petrol.

There were instructions in the M340i handbook. The accelerator had to be on the floor for the symbol to come on dashboard.

Only did it twice and i felt bad for the car

I've just checked, and indeed that apparently exists on this car in the manual (I was under the impression it was added during the cars lifecycle and didn't want to just try it for fairly obvious reasons)

Bigger issue would be finding somewhere around where to properly try it. One day. Not today

I think car guys have a responsibility to have "a road" that they know for "special testing" situations.i have a great little nsl connecting road with fields either side and no turnings only half a mile from my house . It's two straights where you can get to illegal speeds and back down on each.

Incidentally we took my mates Tesla 3 performance there last week for some runs. Impressive.

I used to know a few around Scarborough, but around here, I've not really had the chance to find any.

I should probably do something about that now that I can afford the fuel and I'm not on call 24/7 any more (and so don't have to be near a computer all the time).

Yes, and CGs usually know where the nearest NSL sign to their house is 😃

I'd agree, but it's not even that torquey - 270 lb-ft.

And it drinks like a fucking fish.

(don't forget to change it to UK units - for the devoid of clicking, the average as reported by Fuelly users is ~20mpg )

Absolute best I could get from the W12 was just over 20mpg on a long run while concentrating. So this is 20 mpg while driving a Passat. And a person/people has done that for 185k miles. That doesn't even make sense.

B5 Passat fans are weird. They're like VW T4 fans and Ford RS fans.
