For loading Kodi on or just as a smart device?

It's for my son who would like "all of the tv" so not sure if that's now an IP TV subscription or Kodi or something else? It's been a while since I've looked at this sort of thing.

Aye, it's been a while for me too but afaik the best dodgy tv boxes are raspberry pi based these days.

I used to have a firestick with Kodi but it kept getting less and less reliable so I gave up on it.

Yeah, I think that's when I gave up on it too, was becoming a PITA.
