Volvo update:
- You can really tell it's Haldex. The fronts give a squeak of wheelspin before the power moves to the rear. I thought the Golf R and other VAG Haldex cars didn't do this now but I've not tried a recent one; does it happen on VWs too? My old Audi, having the proper quattro 4wd, was much nicer.
- After 20-30 miles of cold (14C!) wet M5 this morning without braking, the brakes didn't initially work very well; quite disconcerting. I needed to press harder and then release and press again to get proper retardation. And we all know this forum likes full retardation. The only other car I've had which did the same thing was my Elise, and that didn't have a brake servo... which meant it was a lot easier to touch the brakes with your left foot every now and again when driving up a wet motorway to keep them ready. Presumably it's the pad material at fault since there's not much which varies between steel brake disks.
- It feels quite sprightly. It's actually a little lighter than my BMW 535i and the A6 which were both around 1900kg; the Volvo is just over 1800kg. It has similar power to the BMW but feels much more torquey low down and has more of a lunge for the horizon when you keep your foot in. The Audi had a different sort of speed but I was always suspicious that it was quicker than the BMW despite being ostensibly 10% less powerful (the 272PS version of the 3.0 TDI apparently put out much closer to 300bhp in reality and obviously it had a load more torque) but I put that down to the diesel bottom end. Maybe the BMW wasn't quite running correctly?

Crikey, doesn't it have automatic brake drying? I thought that was a 'thing' on all high-end cars now?

I've never, ever needed automatic brake drying previously except on the Elise so have never noticed whether any cars have it. It can drive itself so it can certainly apply them on its own!

With all due respect to Mr Jobson's very nice new car, I don't think that would be classed as high-end. From a cursory google, it seems to be standard on a basic C-class. I think you're living in the 1990s

The previous owner of my car had had the bonnet and bumper resprayed fairly recently, so its condition is quite pristine. I decided to have PPF installed, as this is my 'forever car' and that it'll be tracked.
I opted for full frontal, roof and spoiler. Spoiler now fully functional as a picnic table
The chaps at paintguard.co.uk did an outstanding job.
At the same time it had the 'sticker no plate' removed as I was never a fan of them; normal plate and plate holder attached and also the chin spoiler installed.
Collected the car yesterday; don't think it'll stay this clean for long!

I think everyone knows my feelings on PPF but it’s acceptable on a track car so i’ll let it pass
My dad bought a big roll of 3M film for me to do some bits on his car as the front tyres stick out past the arches which is smashing the mirror housings and rear arches.

Further Volvo update. I was the first car behind a highways officer who stopped all southbound traffic because of somebody on the hard shoulder of the other carriageway. Being first away once they let us pass, it would have been rude not to enjoy the empty M5 for 5 or 6 miles.

I didn’t think I’d ever bother finding out if the speed limiter works. It’s a little relaxed but you can feel it cut the power.
