Re: Manual or Auto
Have 8 manuals, 2 autos. Would have chosen a manual x5 if they made them, only because it would allow v8 throttle blipping goodness.
Merc is fine as an auto, don’t think you’d gain anything if it was manual.

Re: Manual or Auto
Horses for courses. I wouldn't want a manual SUV, nor would I want a torque converter auto in a sports car (Jag F type I'm looking at you).
Re: Manual or Auto
What if your F-type was your daily and you spent 80% of your time in it stuck in traffic....?
Re: Manual or Auto
I'd still want it to have a twin clutch box rather than torque converter as the downside of the less smooth creep in traffic would be a fair trade off for the 20% you drive it with your hair on fire. The 991 PDK doesn't annoy in traffic at all and is a good compromise give it spends a lot of time in London traffic.

From a licensing, insurance, and otherwise legal perspective, that's an autoGG. wrote: ↑Mon Jan 08, 2024 6:21 pm I'd still want it to have a twin clutch box rather than torque converter as the downside of the less smooth creep in traffic would be a fair trade off for the 20% you drive it with your hair on fire. (but I get your point - the broader point I was making was more about not having to use a clutch pedal in town, which I've recently been enlightened to)
Re: Manual or Auto
In that case - completely agree with that. Having a PDK in the 911 is fantastic for mooching about in traffic.

Yeah, we are all old now!.. if it’s going to be used in stop start traffic then auto is superior

Re: Manual or Auto
If it was mine only and an option, all cars would be manual apart from oddly, the 500e as it suits the 4 speed auto, it’s more of an “of its time” experience when I drive it.
I’ve driven VAG group DCT and it was a bit rubbish as an engaging manual and not as good as an auto, I’d rather have a new 8 speed ZF which in a 520D I drove was scarily good at always being in the right gear.
The newer 9 speed Merc auto though was horrid, too many gears and not close to the zf 8 speed.
Dave!

Re: Manual or Auto
As I am an up and coming RACE driver, I only drive EXTREME sports cars, including for the daily commute to the TRACK. All those cars come in manuel as a matter of course.
In real life, however, PDK is sublime for all situations. I do prefer the six speed manuel of the R though, gun to my head.

Re: Manual or Auto
Got a manual and a DSG, I don't like the DSG at all for the kind of driving I do nowadays. It's ok in traffic I guess but It's bloody slow witted around town.
The wife likes it, so It's a good compromise for us to share, but unless constantly stuck in traffic, I'd always go manual.

Re: Manual or Auto
2 Manuels here - my wife hates autos too, so that's not going to be changing.

Re: Manual or Auto
We both prefer manuals, but the Zoe is a single speed auto. So, we're 50/50.

Re: Manual or Auto
I've only ever had one Auto car, which was a DSG Audi A3, which I thought was fine for the few years I had it. Never had any issues with that box personally, but mainly just left it in auto as most of my driving was on the motorway at that point.
I am tempted to give an auto a go for my next car when I get round to switching up my current car. I don't do a huge amount of miles, so another manual would be fine, but fancy a lazier option after 12 years of manuals.
